This year, The Block is located in Melbourne’s iconic Gatwick Hotel building in St Kilda. With so much history and personality in the building and its surrounds, the pressure on this year’s contestants to create incredible apartments s has been higher than ever. What these apartments have in common is generous light and large space, more so in the penthouse apartments so this year, The Block kitchens exude luxury, entertainment and high end technology. All about Horse Bazaar; the quintessential funky Melbourne eatery

Horse Bazaar ramen

Well this will come as a shock to most people but I have never had Ramen.. Until now and since then, I have had it 3 times and none compared to what I had at Horse Bazaar. Before I delve into the ramen, let’s talk about Horse Bazaar. It is the prime example of Melbourne eatery – a funky hidden gem in the city, offering classic Japanese dishes with a little twist, unlike their drinks offerings which are classic but with a Japanese twist. The decor is a little kitsch, a combination of Asia meets mirror disco balls with manga films projected on the walls. But now onto more pressing matter – the food. Being a Saturday, I knew we were in store for their ‘Ramen Saturdays’, I knew we would be in store for something exciting. We were lucky to taste the traditional chicken broth ramen, a spicy pork ramen and a vegetarian with crispy tofu. We also had dumplings and the one thing that gives me life no matter the weather; JFC or to those that don’t know, Japanese Fried Chicken. I could try and describe what I tasted but with my lack of knowledge of ramen, all that’s important is that it was so delicious, moreish and filled this void in my life I didn’t know existed. If you would like to know which one was my favourite ramen, I’m going to let you down and say they were all delicious and worth having a try of all so my suggestion would… Read More

Top destinations to wine and dine around Australia in 2019

Brae

The best places in Australia were decided on recently in the latest instalment of the national Good Food Guide Awards, marking the official launch of the 2019 Good Food Guide. Jock Zonfrillo’s Restaurant Orana (SA) nabbed the night’s top honour of Vittoria Restaurant of the Year – following his win in the Food for Good category last year, while Peter Gilmore (Quay, NSW) took out the prestigious Citi Chef of the Year award, and Jodie Odrowaz (Iki Jime, VIC) was named the Josephine Pignolet Young Chef of the Year. New Restaurant of the Year was awarded to Laura (VIC), while Santa Vittoria Regional Restaurant of the Year went to the much-lauded Brae (VIC). This is also the first year the national awards has been held in Melbourne, with support from Visit Victoria. To get a spot in the coveted Guide, restaurants in New South Wales and Victoria must score at least 14 out of 20, while all other states must score a minimum of 15. To achieve a hat is a pinnacle of a chef’s career and a restaurant’s history, and the term ‘hatted’ has become embedded in the Australian lexicon. Only seven restaurants nationally achieved the top accolade of three hats, and they include Attica (VIC), Brae (VIC), Momofuku Seiobo (NSW), Minamishima (VIC), Quay (NSW), Restaurant Orana (SA) and Sixpenny (NSW). LUMAS Gallery has a new exhibition of photographer Werner Pawlok

House of Maria © Werner Pawlok au.lumas.com

The culture capital has again turned it on at LUMAS Gallery, putting on a show for photography lovers the city/country-wide. The artist? Photographer Werner Pawlok, of course and it’s not stingy on the colour; if that’s your thing. Pawlok first started photographing his idol Jimi Hendrix way back when, and has now established a strong portfolio of profile and celebrities images including John Malkovich, Jean Paul Gaultier, Juliette Binoche and in a good Australian connection, Leigh Bowery. In 1988, Werner contacted Bowery after seeing him in a magazine and Bowery came to Pawlok’s studio for an exclusive shoot and his images have become some of the most synonymous with the performance artist. This exhibition in October at the gallery in Melbourne features a series of works capturing the homes of Havana across the last decade. So, if the reclusive Communist state that almost sparked the end of the world in the Cold War is your thing, then you need to go. The images offer a fascinating glimpse into life in the Cuban capital as it begins to undergo a process of momentous change and reflects on the former glory of its past. The images are stunning, rich blues and greens with old world chandeliers and antique furniture situated alongside to faded photos of revolutionary director Che Guevara. Pawlok has visited Cuba a number of times including for a Chanel fashion show with Harper’s Bazaar and seeks out less accessible places to shoot, literally driving around town for hours until he sees a building he is drawn too and then knocking on strangers doors… Read More

Glenfiddich whisky and PS40 have teamed up to create an experimental range designed to impress even the most discerning palate

Glenfiddich

Pleasure and pain. Salt and pepper. Tom and Jerry. Peanut butter and jelly. Some things just go together – such is the case with whisky and soda, leading award-winning Scotch whisky distillery Glenfiddich to collaborate with craft soda factory PS40 to create a range of experimental highballs designed to tantalise your tastebuds. The Glenfiddich Experimental series – consisting of the IPA Experiment, Project XX (pronounced “twenty”), and Winter Storm – provided the backdrop for the collaboration, with Glenfiddich brand ambassador Luke Sanderson working alongside Michael Cheim and Thor Bergquist of PS40 to create two limited edition sodas. The resultant PS Pandan Barley and PS Strawberry Gum Leaf seamlessly blend with the IPA Experiment and Project XX to create a luxurious highball. “PS40 are constantly coming up with new ways to innovate and experiment within their category,” says Luke Sanderson on the decision to collaborate with PS40. “Much like Glenfiddich, they strive to create new and exciting concepts, so they’re the perfect partner for us to highlight our ability to push boundaries.” The Experimental Highball SS18 series will be available across 200 leading Australian bars, including Zeta Bar and The Argyle in Sydney, and Ms Collins and Hightail in Melbourne. Sydneysiders can also get the bespoke sodas on tap at PS40. The first soda, PS Pandan Barley, utilizes the fragrant Asian plant to upgrade the traditional lemon barley soda, making for a dry soda with a rich, nutty Pandan leaf aftertaste.
