Who’s who? The cast of West Side Story on Sydney Harbour has been announced

West Side story

They’re doing something different this year. Every year, Opera Australia puts on a grand outdoor performance of their headline act for the autumn-winter season, but this year, they’re trying something new. The Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (HOSH) isn’t doing an opera this year, rather a modern production of West Side Story and the cast is epic. They’ll take to Opera Australia’s famous over-water stage and join opera/musical crossover stars Julie Lea Goodwin and Alexander Lewis, the role of the fiery Anita will be played by Melbourne-born Karli Dinardo, who is gaining attention as a rising musical theatre star in the U.S., with performances in Hamilton(National Tour), West Side Story (Carnegie Hall), and the starring role in Flashdance (National Tour). Karli will be joined on stage by her sister, Luca Dinardo, who will play the tomboy Anybodys, pitching the sisters against each other on opposing sides of the famous West Side Story gang rivalry. “I was blown away by the calibre of Australian performers that auditioned,” said Associate Director and Choreographer, Julio Monge. See it from 22 March to 21 April 2019, or for more, go to the Opera Australia website.

How to earn money on the side

Woman work laptop computer

Many people enjoy the rewards of running a part-time business on the side, and some even become successful enough to go full-time, earning good money and building substantial businesses. You don’t have to be a budding entrepreneur to start a side hustle; you can do it simply to earn the cash for a holiday, or to spend on personal luxuries. There are numerous ways to earn a little extra cash, and you can choose to spend as much or as little time on them as you wish. Choosing your side hustle Don’t be put off by the current terminology! A side hustle is just a way of describing any kind of money-earning venture that you do in addition to your main job. It doesn’t have to be as elaborate as a small business; you could make commission sales or make regular sales on eBay. If you’re stuck for an idea, there are some great articles online that are full of good ways to earn money on the side. Old job, new approach One very good example of how side hustles have developed over recent years is in the field of beauty catalogue sales. For years the Avon Lady would call round to your house with a catalogue, or customers would organise parties where all their friends would come and chat to the Avon rep. This business model is still alive and kicking, but it’s also transforming into a new, modern interpretation. Many Avon reps are now creating videos showcasing the products and demonstrating how to… Read More

gentSac men’s grooming is open at The Galeries

gentSac shop

Sure, after a few years of owning the kiosk game at The Galeries, she never saw herself running her own men’s grooming business right in the heart of Sydney, but here she is. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Founder and master of the gentSac, Shira O’Sullivan-Linker turned her years working in retail, merchandising, buying and just generally giving a damn about what the dude she introduced to everyone as “her boyfriend” looked like, into a small business operation that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. She used to be a one-woman-band who occupied one of the central spots in The Galeries thoroughfare, grabbing men of all walks who were keen on a spruce-up or who looked like they might benefit from one. By stocking products she believed in – not only for their ingredients, but the story behind them – Shira found something there. “No longer was it embarrassing or ‘not manly’ to care about how you look or spend the time on yourself as a man,” she said. Dudes were into it and so was she. For obvious reason. There’s something satisfying about being a man and being able to walk into a shop that’s nothing like a Mecca Maxima, for example, and shop products for men – often by men, too – in a disarming, casual and relatable space. That’s what gentSac prides itself on. With products for face, hair, beard, and body, as well as the odd knick-knack for everything in-between, Shira and gentSac have managed to command the attention… Read More

Lot. One does casual dining with refined flair in Potts Point

Lot One Potts Point front

There’s a new contender for the crown of nice Potts Point restaurants and it extends far beyond the comparatively well-walked paths forged by the likes of Cio Cio San, Billy Kwong’s and The Tilbury. Lot.One is the Sydney city, then-Italian inspired restaurant that took over three floors and a gigantic space right in the heart of the city, that downsized and moved east to what is quickly proving to be its major betterment. Co-owner Michael Bradley busies himself around the considerably smaller service floor of the inner-east restaurant, that has taken-over the stunning space inside an heritage Potts Point building. He explains it used to be a brothel, a butcher and myriad other places of interest to the area’s pretty eclectic mix of locals over the decades until now, when it’s become his baby and a restaurant operation that offers a menu like few you’ll find nearby. Lot. One does a contemporary take on the foods we all like; only more interestingly and with something that can best be described as a little more abstract. They do ‘food and fun’, in that order, and it’s easy to see why and how. From the casual-yet-refined interior, to the sideboard bar, relaxed choice of music and tasteful decorations, the restaurant is as welcoming as it is street-side flashy, taking all the best bits of what you like about an approachable restaurant, adding a bay window and turning it out on all nights of the week. The Lot. One menu is one of a lot of thought and… Read More
