Legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie, renowned for dressing some of the world’s most iconic stars, takes centre stage in The Dress and the Diva, a new podcast created by Arts Centre Melbourne. Hosted by broadcaster Jacinta Parsons, this six-episode series delves into the lives, careers, and costumes of some of the most dazzling divas, complementing the acclaimed DIVA exhibition currently on display at the Australian Museum of Performing Arts (AMPA) until 26 April.
Mackie, affectionately known as the “Sultan of Sequins,” shares his insights and anecdotes about working with stars like Cher, Elton John, and Diana Ross. His designs, celebrated for their extravagance and glamour, are a highlight of the DIVA exhibition, which features over 250 objects, including 60 spectacular costumes, jewellery, and photography from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection.
Joining Mackie on the podcast are Australian pop icon Marcia Hines, soprano Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO, comedian and cabaret star Reuben Kaye, Eurovision couturier Gwendolynne Burkin, and the ever-glamorous Meow Meow. Together, they explore what it truly means to be a diva, sharing stories of resilience, creativity, and ambition.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Mackie says, “A diva is that superstar that your eyes can’t leave…ever – you just can’t leave her.” He fondly recalls working with Cher, noting, “She just loved getting dressed up…every week she had something different on.”
The DIVA exhibition itself is a celebration of divas across generations, from 19th-century opera goddesses to today’s global pop icons. Featuring legendary names like Maria Callas, Judy Garland, Grace Jones, Madonna, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, the exhibition is a testament to the enduring allure and influence of these extraordinary performers.
Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in the world of divas through The Dress and the Diva podcast and the spectacular DIVA exhibition, exclusive to Melbourne.
