London’s East Bank is about to level up in a spectacular way. Sadler’s Wells East, the capital’s newest purpose-built dance theatre, will officially open its doors in just four weeks’ time with a show-stopping debut.
Starting Thursday, 6 February 2025, Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s Our Mighty Groove will christen this state-of-the-art venue, described as a “gamechanger for dance” by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
Perched on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, Sadler’s Wells East is the first public building unveiled within East Bank, the city’s burgeoning cultural and educational hotspot. It joins an all-star lineup alongside future giants like BBC Music Studios, V&A East, UAL’s London College of Fashion, and UCL East, forming the beating heart of a vibrant new creative community.
A New Home for Dance
Designed by award-winning architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, Sadler’s Wells East is more than just a theatre – it’s a haven for dance. The new building boasts a flexible 550-seat auditorium, six cutting-edge dance studios, and a public performance space offering free shows. There’s even a restaurant and bar for those pre- and post-show catch-ups. Add in beautifully crafted public spaces that feature Eva Rothschild RA’s stunning woven tapestries and expertly designed lighting by Aideen Malone, and it’s clear this place isn’t just built for dance – it’s celebrating it.
Britannia Morton, Executive Director and Co-Chief Executive of Sadler’s Wells, proudly adds, “Sadler’s Wells East is purpose-built for dance and dance makers. We believe the facilities here will make a significant difference, boosting the thriving creative scene in East London. We can’t wait to welcome artists, audiences, and community groups into the building for the very first time.”
The venue will also double as an incubator. It gives mid-scale dance companies from across the UK and beyond a much-needed home in London while enabling Sadler’s Wells to produce something brand new, right from scratch. Artistic Director and Co-Chief Executive, Sir Alistair Spalding, said, “It’s hugely exciting to be here, just a month out from opening with Our Mighty Groove. Vicki’s production is the perfect curtain raiser — a joyous burst of movement featuring professional and community performers alike. From here, we’ll be presenting a kaleidoscope of styles throughout the year – truly something for everyone.”
The Opening Season – A Dance Feast for All
The debut season at Sadler’s Wells East promises 20 unique productions ranging from hip hop to kathak, ballet to contemporary. This thrilling mix includes work from East London talent, the best UK companies, and innovative international choreographers.
Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s Our Mighty Groove kicks things off in February with an electrifying celebration of dance and community. From there, the season boasts ambitious highlights like Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Inside Giovanni’s Room, a reinterpretation of James Baldwin’s iconic novel. Equally groundbreaking is Skatepark by Mette Ingvartsen, blending dancers and skateboarders in a show complete with half pipes and ramps.
Audiences can also look forward to collaborations – such as a community-powered adaptation of Romeo & Juliet with Stratford East – and international gems, including Ivan Michael Blackstock’s Olivier-winning TRAPLORD, which boldly challenges stereotypes about Black men. Other notable features include Trajal Harrell’s new work set to Keith Jarrett and Joni Mitchell tracks, and Aakash Odedra’s poetic exploration of Sufi kathak in Songs of the Bulbul. The season builds to a crescendo with a summer youth festival, showcasing young talent across the UK.
Making Dance Accessible to All
Dance is for everyone, and Sadler’s Wells East is doubling down on its dedication to affordability. Over 50% of all tickets for the opening season are priced at £25 or less. For younger audiences (aged 16 to 30), the £10 Barclays Dance Pass makes every performance not just accessible, but a steal.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan underlines the venue’s importance, stating, “This brand-new venue will be a gamechanger for dance in the capital. With its schools, studio spaces, and thrilling programming, Sadler’s Wells East will nurture talent and provide inspiration to audiences and young people alike. It’s a world-class vision, designed to be accessible for all.”
Dancing into the Future
Sadler’s Wells East is also heavily focused on education and innovation. Starting in autumn, Academy Breakin’ Convention will open its doors to talented 16–19-year-olds, offering the UK’s first free Level 3 Diploma in hip hop theatre performance. Alongside this, The Rose Choreographic School will push boundaries, supporting 13 dance artists as they explore and refine their craft over two years.
It’s clear that Sadler’s Wells East isn’t just a venue – it’s part of a broader movement to foster creativity, inclusivity, and excellence.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of dance or someone looking to experience it for the first time, Sadler’s Wells East promises to be a cultural keystone where everyone belongs. Secure your tickets and be ready to immerse yourself in bold, diverse, boundary-pushing dance – Stratford’s new stage is waiting for you.
