Opera Australia is set to cast a magical spell over audiences next month with their highly anticipated new production of Antonin Dvo?ák’s Rusalka.
This lush and romantic opera, rarely performed by major companies, promises to be an unforgettable experience, marking the return of internationally celebrated soprano Nicole Car to the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House. Running from 19 July to 11 August 2025, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for opera lovers to experience Rusalka in all its glory.
A Resplendent Cast Led by Nicole Car
Making her long-awaited return to Opera Australia, Australian-born soprano Nicole Car will debut in the title role of Rusalka. An alumna of the OA Young Artist Program, Nicole has since taken the world by storm with her critically acclaimed performances across Europe and the United States. Her interpretation of the water nymph yearning for human love, and her rendition of the opera’s hauntingly beautiful aria, “Song to the Moon,” is set to be a career-defining moment.
Joining Nicole is a dynamic and talented cast, including Austrian-Australian tenor Gerard Schneider, who will make his OA debut as The Prince. Known for his powerful voice and compelling stage presence, Schneider brings an emotional depth that is perfectly matched to this tragic romantic lead.
The cast also features local stars Warwick Fyfe, an audience favourite known for his rich baritone; mezzo-soprano Ashlyn Tymms; and the exquisite soprano Natalie Aroyan. Together, they will weave a musical and dramatic tapestry that underscores the beauty and heartbreak of Dvo?ák’s masterpiece.
Masterful Direction and Creative Vision
This new production, led by award-winning director Sarah Giles, combines innovation with respect for tradition. Giles, whose recent production of La Traviata enjoyed two sold-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House, brings a fresh perspective to Rusalka. Her vision is brought to life through an evocative set designed by Charles Davis and shimmering, dream-like costumes by Renée Mulder. The interplay of light and shadow, crafted by lighting designer Paul Jackson, deepens the mystical atmosphere, enveloping the audience in a world that feels both ethereal and perilous.
Giles is joined by esteemed conductor Johannes Fritzsch, who will lead the Opera Australia Orchestra in delivering Dvo?ák’s deeply emotive score. His rich blend of romantic melodies, intricate harmonies, and touches of Czech folk music makes Rusalka one of opera’s most captivating musical experiences.
A Story of Love, Sacrifice, and Magic
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid long before Disney popularised the tale, Dvo?ák’s Rusalka blends the familiar fairy tale with the darker elements of Slavic mythology. The story follows Rusalka, a water nymph who dreams of becoming human after falling in love with a prince. With the help of a witch, she gains her humanity but at a perilous cost. Themes of love, identity, and the sacrifices we make for freedom are explored in this poignant opera, with Rusalka’s tragic fate serving as a powerful meditation on the consequences of desire.
Rarely Performed Masterpiece
One of Dvo?ák’s greatest and most beloved works, Rusalka is rarely staged, making this production all the more special. It has been 20 years since Opera Australia last performed this romantic gem, and the company’s choice to bring it back with such a stellar cast and creative team underscores its importance. The production has already garnered praise following its debut in Perth with West Australian Opera last year, and the Sydney season promises to enhance its reputation further.
