Get ready, as the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is thrilled to once again welcome swimmers, runners, and spectators to two of Australia’s most beloved sporting events: the Powercor Lorne Pier to Pub and the Mountain to Surf. These cornerstone events are a true celebration of Lorne’s vibrant coastal community and spirit.
Mark your calendars for Friday 9 and Saturday 10 January 2026! This weekend will see over 7,000 participants and 20,000 visitors descend on the beautiful Surf Coast for a tradition that combines athletic challenge, camaraderie, and vital fundraising for the Lorne SLSC.
A Weekend of Community and Competition
Held annually on the second weekend of January, these events have become a much-loved tradition. They represent more than just a race; they are a powerful display of community connection.
Race Director and long-time competitor Peter Williamson shared his thoughts on what makes the weekend so special. “Every year, we’re inspired by the energy and dedication of our volunteers, participants and supporters. These events are a true reflection of what community spirit looks like: bringing people of all ages and abilities together to celebrate the coast we love.”
Last Year’s Unforgettable Moments
The previous events were packed with incredible athletic feats and record-breaking performances that left everyone buzzing.
Mountain to Surf: A Record Shattered
In the Powercor Lorne Mountain to Surf, a 19-year-old record finally fell. Elwood runner Edward Marks delivered a stunning performance, clocking an incredible 21:48 for the 8km course. This amazing time beat former-Olympian Steve Moneghetti’s 2006 record and secured him first place in the men’s Open division.
In the women’s field, elite marathon runner Sarah Klein dominated the pack to claim the top spot for the second year in a row. Over 2,100 participants took on the scenic route, which winds through beautiful forested trails and along the iconic Great Ocean Road.
Pier to Pub: Elite Talent and Local Heroes
The following day, the 45th Powercor Lorne Pier to Pub cemented its reputation as Australia’s largest open-water swim, with more than 4,900 swimmers taking the plunge.
Lani Pallister, an Olympic gold medallist and recent World Record setter, powered to her sixth consecutive win in the women’s division. She completed the 1.2km course in a blistering 11:25. Meanwhile, fellow Olympian Nick Sloman claimed victory in the men’s race with a time of 10:13, just ahead of World 400m Silver medallist Sam Short.
While the podium showcased some of the country’s top athletic talent, it was a local hero who truly captured the crowd’s heart. Lorne SLSC club member Harry Hay ignited cheers from the beach as he charged out of the shallows to finish third in the Superfish division, right behind the two star Olympians. What a moment!
Powered by People and Purpose
Now entering its 46th year, the weekend continues to embody the Lorne SLSC’s mission of promoting beach safety, wellness, and connection through sport. The events simply wouldn’t be possible without the huge contribution of volunteers from the SLSC community and the backing of key sponsors.
The 2026 event also marks the seventh consecutive year that Powercor has served as the title partner, reinforcing its commitment to supporting regional communities and volunteer lifesaving services. Scott Russell, General Manager at Powercor, said, “We’re proud to continue standing alongside the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club. Just as our teams keep the power flowing along the Great Ocean Road, the club’s volunteers keep the community safe on and off the beach.”
All proceeds from the races go directly to the Lorne SLSC, helping to fund the maintenance of water safety equipment and services along the beautiful surf coast.
