See it while you can: Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru

Time is running out to witness one of the most extraordinary exhibitions to grace the Australian Museum. With just weeks left until its final day on Sunday, 11 May, now is your chance to step into the fascinating world of ancient Peru through the acclaimed showcase Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru.

Since its debut in November, this blockbuster exhibition has attracted nearly 200,000 visitors, dazzling audiences with its breathtaking presentation of 134 priceless artefacts spanning over 3,000 years of Peruvian history. From the enigmatic Chavín to the powerful Inca civilisation, these treasures offer a rare glimpse into the rich legacy of a remarkable culture. Visitors can also immerse themselves in an award-winning virtual reality experience that brings the wonders of Machu Picchu to vivid life.

Celebrate Peru at “Peruvian Nights”

To bid farewell to this one-of-a-kind exhibition, the Australian Museum invites everyone to its grand celebration, Peruvian Nights at the Museum, on Wednesday, 7 May. This after-dark cultural fiesta is a free event, running until 9pm and brimming with the vibrant sounds, tastes, and sights of Peru.

Highlights of the evening include live music from the celebrated Peruvian ensemble Duo Jimenez, Afro-Peruvian beats from ALLY, and special guest performances, all filling Hintze Hall with the rhythmic energy of the Andes. Attendees can enjoy pisco sours and Peruvian-inspired snacks from La Cantina de Cusco, while soaking in the stunning visual storytelling of World above, world below, a photo essay by Peruvian Australian photojournalist Isabella Melody Moore, capturing the unique fusion of Indigenous and Catholic traditions in Peruvian Carnaval.

Don’t Miss Out

Australian Museum Director and CEO, Kim McKay AO, encourages visitors to seize this opportunity to explore a world thousands of years in the making.

“This extraordinary exhibition has allowed visitors to experience the beauty, ingenuity, and complexity of ancient Peru. We’re thrilled to host one final celebration with Peruvian Nights at the Museum, a true fin de fiesta to conclude this unforgettable cultural experience.”
