Step into a world where gods walk among mortals, legendary battles rage, and timeless human emotions take centre stage. Malthouse Theatre’s highly anticipated production of Troy is set to ignite the stage at the Merlyn Theatre from 4 September 2025.
Directed by the brilliant Ian Michael, a Wilman Noongar man and one of Australia’s most gripping stage visionaries, and penned by renowned writer and adaptor Tom Wright, this epic retelling of the ancient Greek legend promises to be the theatrical event of the season.
Following their groundbreaking work on the 2025 Sydney Theatre Company success Picnic at Hanging Rock, Michael and Wright reunite to push creative boundaries once more. Together, they’ll breathe fresh life into the mythic tale of Troy, bringing a bold, visceral production that resonates profoundly with the contemporary world.
A dazzling collaboration
Reflecting on their creative synergy, Ian Michael shares, “I’m honoured to be working with Tom again on this epic tale. There’s a creative shorthand between us that allows for bold, instinctive storytelling, and this piece demands nothing less. Together, with this extraordinary cast, we’re going to bring Tom’s brilliant work to life in a way that feels urgent and visceral.”
Michael has firmly established himself as a force in Australian theatre. His tenure as Resident Director at Sydney Theatre Company has seen him deliver acclaimed productions such as Stolen (2024) and Constellations (2023). He’s also worked as Associate Director to Kip Williams on groundbreaking cine-theatre pieces, including The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula.
For Tom Wright, whose house of work includes Black Medea, The Women of Troy, and Oresteia, writing Troy marks another milestone in his mastery of reimagining ancient stories. “It’s just a privilege to work with Ian and build something extraordinary with such talented actors,” Wright says. His focus on imbuing Greek legends with modern relevance ensures Troy will confront today’s audiences with the timeless truths of the human experience.
An explosive cast
The production boasts a powerhouse ensemble of performers, each ready to take audiences on a breathtaking theatrical odyssey. The cast includes Ciline Ajobong (Mustangs FC), Paula Arundell (Harry Potter & the Cursed Child), Danny Ball (Loaded), Elizabeth Blackmore (Death of a Salesman), Geraldine Hakewill (Gaslight), Lyndon Watts (Hamilton), and Mark Leonard Winter (A Streetcar Named Desire).
Under the shadow of the legendary Trojan horse, these talented actors will deliver physically demanding, poetic performances that promise to immerse audiences in the gritty intensity of the ancient world.
A tale reimagined
Troy reexamines the 12th century BCE legend with a sharp lens on contemporary parallels. Under Michael’s direction, the production will pulse with ferocity and relevance, challenging audiences to reflect on war, power, and humanity’s unshakable entanglement with violence.
Michael’s ability to craft rich atmospheres and layered narratives on stage has earned him critical acclaim. Limelight hailed him as “the most exciting new director of this generation,” a sentiment echoed by Tom Wright’s admiration for his craft.
Originally scheduled to be directed by outgoing Artistic Director Matthew Lutton, who now leads the Adelaide Festival, Lutton’s vision for Troy has been entrusted to Michael. This transition reflects Malthouse Theatre’s confidence in his ability to execute a production worthy of its epic scale.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Merlyn Theatre, Troy invites you on an unforgettable journey through myth and modernity.
