Evita the Musical in Melbourne: A review

Tina-Arena-EVITA-Sydney-2018-photo-Jeff-Busby-1024x691

If you had asked me – before the announcement of this production – which Australian performer would be best suited to play the role of Eva Peron in Evita, I doubt I would’ve been able to think of any. Yet, as soon as the casting was announced I was simultaneously surprised, excited, and relieved that the enormously talented Tina Arena had been cast. (Full disclosure – I am a huge Tina fan).  With effortless delivery and commanding vocal range, Arena takes hold of the legendarily demanding role and delivers a multiple standing ovation-worthy performance; one that is sure to be remembered by all who bear witness. Setting the tone and direction of the story Kurt Kansley as charmingly sardonic narrator Che, captures the audience from the outset with cynical asides and humour and like Ms. Arena, delivers a pitch perfect performance imbuing Tim Rice’s simple lyrics with deep understanding. Paulo Szots’s gutsy Peron is grounded, rich and much more three-dimensional than other interpretations and is both refreshing and absolutely right.  The powerhouse ensemble was the glue that brought the show together and effortlessly delivered a new standard in cohesiveness and unity that punctuated and allowed the score to flow with ease. The greatest privilege was to be able to see the original production design, choreography, and costume. With a strong reference to Brechtian staging and direction it allows the performances to be the focus of every moment and shows great restraint that perfectly balances the grandeur of the subject matter that led to the world’s fascination… Read More

gentSac men’s grooming is open at The Galeries

gentSac shop

Sure, after a few years of owning the kiosk game at The Galeries, she never saw herself running her own men’s grooming business right in the heart of Sydney, but here she is. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Founder and master of the gentSac, Shira O’Sullivan-Linker turned her years working in retail, merchandising, buying and just generally giving a damn about what the dude she introduced to everyone as “her boyfriend” looked like, into a small business operation that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. She used to be a one-woman-band who occupied one of the central spots in The Galeries thoroughfare, grabbing men of all walks who were keen on a spruce-up or who looked like they might benefit from one. By stocking products she believed in – not only for their ingredients, but the story behind them – Shira found something there. “No longer was it embarrassing or ‘not manly’ to care about how you look or spend the time on yourself as a man,” she said. Dudes were into it and so was she. For obvious reason. There’s something satisfying about being a man and being able to walk into a shop that’s nothing like a Mecca Maxima, for example, and shop products for men – often by men, too – in a disarming, casual and relatable space. That’s what gentSac prides itself on. With products for face, hair, beard, and body, as well as the odd knick-knack for everything in-between, Shira and gentSac have managed to command the attention… Read More

Saint George by chef James Metcalfe in Chippendale is doing everything right

Saint George

James Metcalfe moved over from the UK long enough ago for it to not matter, but there’s one thing from the motherland he carries with him in everything he does: bloody good food. It’s been his calling card from his old days back at Becasse and The Bellevue and now at his newest and nicest venue, Saint George in Chippendale. The corner venue is striking to look at from the street and plays more than its hand in transforming the student-heavy thoroughfare that is Broadway than just offering a nice coffee on the way to work in the morning – which they do for tuppence. Saint George Chippendale is industrially rough on the inside, polished and urban on the outside. It offers an aesthetically cool, well-lit streetside restaurant space for literally everything from morning stop-bys, lunch time meetings and evening time dinner dates with a friggin’ good menu to-boot. Metcalfe is the dude behind W & Co catering in Pyrmont, which – if you’ve sampled before – knows how to do everything from a basic white sangga to a full-blown array of cakes and everything in-between. So, he’s taken the concept of quality food done damn well, turned it up about 250% and bought a restaurant to really show off what he can do. The menu is well-rounded, mostly comes with matched wines and features a tonne of waiters and waitresses who love the food as much as they do their wine and are happy to talk your head off about one, t’other or all… Read More

Johnnie Walker joins the Game of Thrones with new bottle, “White Walker”

Johnnie Walker white 1

Because summer is damn hot and most apartments in Sydney don’t come with aircon (who planned that?!), we have to seek alternative relief. Enter the new White Walker by Johnnie Walker whisky. It’s as cold as your exes’ heart but a thousand times more tasty – and intoxicating – and has recently launched to Australia, making it the first global whisky brand to join the Game of Thrones franchise with a much more refined palette. Sources very close to the Night King have leaked it’s the thorny-headed prick’s favourite beverage, thanks in large part to its woody aromatics, full bodied colour, perspicacity around the easily-influenced and chic white bottling. Amongst other things, the new batch also goes nicely with food as proven by the Johnnie Walker national whisky ambassador Simon McGoram who worked with chef of the Bondi Iceberg’s to whip-up a smashing degustation for its national launch in Sydney recently. It’s also won the heart of  Global World Class Bartender of the Year 2018, Orlando Marzo, who’s been whipping-up drinks with it since he took the crown. Get your own batch of the white stuff from leading retailers. Like, here.

Criniti’s Kirrawee opens in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire

Crinitis Kirrawee dinner

Well-loved Italian favourite Criniti’s has come to The Sutherland Shire as part of the newly opened South Village shopping centre in Kirrawee. The restaurant brings its traditional family recipes that have been perfected over the last 15 years and after a thorough tasting (we’re here to help) we’re ready to say this might just be the best Italian feast you can get in The Shire. The new space is a mix of industrialism and Riviera chic. The large building has soaring ceilings, stunning feature lights and an open plan kitchen so you can see the delicious pizzas being made before your eyes. Despite there plenty of room, making it perfect for groups, there’s an air of intimacy about the restaurant with its choice of faux-outdoor seating, bar area and large indoor tables. The menu itself brings Italian favourites like bolognese and bruschetta, but Criniti’s manages to infuse the traditional with a new twist. Standouts include the pumpkin gnocchi that melts in your mouth, giant antipasto platters that come with crumbed eggplant and zucchini flowers, seafood pasta that is chick full of fat scallops and fresh mussels. Criniti’s is famous for their pizzas and with sizes ranging from a large to a whopping 3 metres long (!), there’s enough to satisfy any appetite. There’s also delightful desserts like Italian donuts with Nutella and a truly decadent chocolate lasagne. The drinks menu is equally impressive with everything from protein packed smoothies, to cocktails, to fine wines and apertivos. Whether you’re dining alone or in a group, Criniti’s… Read More

Loewe has opened its first Sydney boutique

Loewe

Luxury European retailer Loewe opened its doors in Sydney last month after the opening of the first in Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre with the Loewe autumn-winter 2018-19 collection. Casa Loewe features timber walls and polished Campaspero limestone flooring, to serve the dual purpose of creating a sleek, contemporary setting whilst architecturally paying homage to the brand’s European heritage. Loewe incorporates referential elements, like the emerald green stone canopy which derives inspiration from the entrance to Casa Loewe Madrid, which was designed by renowned architect Javier Carvajal in 1959 and captures the essence of modern Spain. Loewe’s curated contemporary and traditional artwork works to infuse elements of past and present into the retail space, highlighting the duality of the Spanish fashion house. Seamlessly infused amongst the selection of women’s RTW, leather goods, and accessories, are meticulously placed works, including a tapestry by weaver and knitter John Allen, and earthenware pot and flower vase by Japanese ceramic artist Koji Kumagai, as well as antique cider presses and bespoke rugs by Nanimarquina. Designed by creative director Jonathan Anderson, Loewe’s latest collection features a plethora of outerwear, as well as classic daywear with a twist. Showcasing the wearability of the collection on the night were influencers including Carmen Hamilton, Nadia Fairfax, Amanda Shadforth, Brooke Testoni, and Yan Yan Chan, Australian model (and ANTM alumni) Aleyna Fitzgerald, and DJ Juay Kennedy. Loewe is now open in Westfield Sydney.
