Cartier at the V&A: A dazzling celebration of jewels and watches

This spring until autumn, the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington will unveil a spectacular new exhibition dedicated to the legendary Maison of Cartier.

Yes, if ever you’ve wanted to be inspired to be more fabulous, this’ll do it.

The fabulously shiny exhibition is the UK’s first major exhibition in nearly 30 years to focus on Cartier’s extraordinary legacy of jewels and watches. Tickets are now on sale, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the artistry, innovation, and glamour that have defined Cartier for over a century.

A journey through Cartier’s legacy

Featuring over 350 objects, the exhibition will chart Cartier’s evolution from a Parisian family jeweler to a global icon of luxury and craftsmanship. Beginning with the vision of Louis, Pierre, and Jacques Cartier—grandsons of founder Louis-François—the exhibition explores how their ambition and creativity transformed the brand into the “jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers.”

Visitors will encounter dazzling creations that have graced royalty, aristocracy, and cultural icons, from Queen Elizabeth II to Grace Kelly and Rihanna. Highlights include the Scroll Tiara, worn at Elizabeth II’s coronation and later by Rihanna on the cover of W Magazine, and Grace Kelly’s iconic engagement ring, which she wore in her final film, High Society.

The exhibition also features treasures from the Royal Collection, including the Williamson Diamond brooch, commissioned for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and set with a rare 23.6-carat pink diamond. Other standout pieces include the Manchester Tiara, the majestic ceremonial necklace of the Maharaja of Patiala, and the striking snake necklace created for Mexican film star María Félix.

A showcase of creativity and craftsmanship

The exhibition is divided into three main sections, each exploring a different facet of Cartier’s legacy. The first section delves into the creativity of the Maison, tracing its sources of inspiration and the emergence of its signature style. From the romantic “Garland Style” of the early 20th century to the bold geometric designs of the Art Deco era, Cartier’s ability to blend modernity with timeless elegance is on full display. Highlights include a 1925 brooch featuring coral and emeralds and a 1941 diamond brooch that exemplifies Cartier’s monochrome sophistication.

The second section focuses on Cartier’s technical ingenuity and access to exceptional gemstones. Visitors will gain insight into the craftsmanship behind Cartier’s iconic designs, including the creation of the panther motif, one of the Maison’s most enduring symbols. A 1978 panther bracelet of pavé diamonds and onyx will be on display, alongside the earliest example of the panther skin pattern, a 1914 wristwatch. This section also showcases some of the world’s most precious gems, such as the vivid yellow diamond Allnatt brooch and the jade bead necklace owned by American heiress Barbara Hutton.

The final section celebrates Cartier’s mastery of image-making and its ability to remain at the forefront of culture and style. From pioneering marketing techniques to collaborations with artists and couturiers, Cartier has consistently shaped its image as a symbol of sophistication and innovation. The exhibition culminates in a breathtaking display of tiaras, including the never-before-exhibited Opal Tiara, commissioned by Mary Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, and worn at Elizabeth II’s coronation.

A dreamscape of light and sound

The exhibition design, led by British architect and artist Asif Khan MBE, promises to be as captivating as the objects on display. Khan describes the experience as “a dreamscape where art and science converge, with Cartier’s pieces suspended in light, time, and sound, allowing history to breathe and the future to linger.” This innovative approach continues Cartier’s tradition of collaborating with artists to create unforgettable scenography.
