As the first hints of warmth return to the air and winter recedes, one of London’s most beloved seasonal celebrations makes its welcome return. From Saturday 14 March to Monday 6 April 2026, Kew Gardens invites visitors to immerse themselves in the spectacular arrival of spring with Sounds of Blossom.

This unique festival marries the breathtaking beauty of Kew’s world-renowned plant collections with the evocative power of music. In a celebrated collaboration with the Royal College of Music, the event enhances the natural spectacle of flowering trees with specially commissioned soundscapes, creating an unforgettable outdoor escape designed to help visitors reconnect with nature.

A Symphony for the Senses

At the heart of Sounds of Blossom is an innovative partnership that brings together nature and artistry. Throughout the festival, new musical compositions created by talented composers from the Royal College of Music will be placed at key blossom hotspots around the Gardens.

These soundscapes are designed to reflect the vibrant energy of springtime. The music complements the kaleidoscope of colours from the magnolia and cherry blossoms, evoking the natural rhythms of the season and creating moments for quiet contemplation.

Sophie Shillito, Creative Programme Manager at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, highlights the unique power of this combination. “The benefits of spending time in nature and listening to music are well documented, so it’s fantastic to be able to combine these elements and allow our visitors to immerse themselves in all that the season has to offer.”

Where to Find the Blossom

Spring is a truly magical time at Kew Gardens, as millions of bulbs burst into life and the landscape is painted with colour. Sounds of Blossom guides visitors to the most spectacular displays.

Cherry Walk and Asano Avenue: This is the quintessential spring experience at Kew. Stroll beneath canopies of pink and white cherry blossom, with carpets of naturalised tulips flowering at their base. The iconic Temperate House provides a stunning backdrop to this floral avenue.

The Japanese Landscape: Here, visitors can find the magnificent great white cherry, Prunus ‘Taihaku’. This species has a remarkable story of survival; it was believed to be extinct in the wild until the 1920s when a plant collector in Sussex matched a tree in his garden to an old Japanese painting. Today, its brilliant white flowers are a highlight of the season.

Princess Walk: This area is transformed by the annual spectacle of magnolias. A plethora of pastel shades—from soft pinks to creamy whites—creates a serene and beautiful vista, enhanced by the accompanying musical compositions.

Live Music and Culinary Delights

The experience extends beyond the pre-recorded soundscapes. During weekends, visitors can enjoy live recitals, adding another layer of magic to their day in the Gardens.

To complete the seasonal celebration, a special blossom-inspired afternoon tea will be available at The Botanical Brasserie for the duration of the festival. This offers the perfect opportunity to relax and indulge after a walk through the blooming landscape. Pre-booking is highly recommended, particularly for popular dates like Mother’s Day and the Easter weekend.

A Unique Opportunity for Young Composers

The collaboration is a prestigious and valuable experience for the student composers involved. Professor Jonathan Cole, Head of Composition at the Royal College of Music, expresses his enthusiasm for the project.

“This project provides our students with an amazing opportunity to explore the deep connections between music, nature, wellbeing and listening,” he explains. “To have one’s music listened to by thousands of people continually over a period of three weeks is an extraordinary privilege for any composer.”

The partnership is one of many ways the Royal College of Music connects its students with leading artistic organisations, preparing them for a career in today’s dynamic society.
