For the first time in nearly 30 years, Bell Shakespeare is set to stage one of Shakespeare’s most powerful and politically charged works, Coriolanus. Directed by Artistic Director Peter Evans, the production opens in Sydney at The Neilson Nutshell from 20 June to 19 July, before heading to Arts Centre Melbourne from 24 July to 10 August.
This timely production stars Logie winner Hazem Shammas (Macbeth, Safe Harbour, The Twelve) in the title role, delivering a powerful exploration of power, its fragility, and its impact. Set against the backdrop of a world inspired by Eastern Europe in the 1990s after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Coriolanus deftly weaves parallels between ancient Rome’s political structures and today’s global politics.
A Story of Power, Politics, and Betrayal
Coriolanus is a fierce protector of Rome, his bravery on the battlefield unmatched. However, his disdain for the public and refusal to conform to political expectations lead to his exile from the city he once defended. When Coriolanus aligns with his sworn enemy to exact revenge on Rome, the city’s fate and his own destiny hang precariously in the balance.
According to director Peter Evans, “Coriolanus is profoundly prescient, reminding us of the fragile nature of democracy.” The play’s exploration of autocracy, the consolidation of power, and the erosion of public trust resonates deeply in today’s climate. However, the production doesn’t focus solely on politics; it is equally a story of complex human emotions and family dynamics, reflecting Shakespeare’s ability to embody the personal within the political.
An Immersive Theatre Experience
The Sydney production uses a traverse stage, with the audience seated on two sides of the action, creating an intimate and immersive experience. This setup places audiences in the heart of the drama, evoking the public nature of politics and offering a front-row seat to the tumultuous unfolding of events.
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
Led by Hazem Shammas as Coriolanus, the ensemble features a lineup of acclaimed actors, including Peter Carroll (King Lear, Aftertaste) as Menenius and Brigid Zengeni, making her Bell Shakespeare debut as Volumnia, Coriolanus’ formidable mother. Other cast members include Anthony Taufa as Aufidius, Jules Billington as the Senator, Septimus Caton as Titus Larcius, Marco Chiappi as Brutus, Suzannah McDonald as Virgilia, Gareth Reeves as Cominius, and Matilda Ridgeway as Sicinius.
The creative team behind this production brings together some of Australia’s finest talent, with Cezera Critti-Schnaars as Associate Director, Ella Butler as Costume Designer, Amelia Lever-Davidson as Lighting Designer, and Max Lyandvert as Composer and Sound Designer. Movement, intimacy, and fight direction are in the capable hands of Nigel Poulton, while Jack Starkey-Gill takes on voice direction.
