New Years Eve with Opera Australia

Opera Australia is set to dazzle audiences once again with its annual New Year’s Eve Opera Gala, a glittering event that promises to be the highlight of Sydney’s cultural calendar.

Taking place in the iconic Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on 31 December 2025, this year’s gala boasts a stellar line-up of talent, hosted by the charismatic Australian actor and singer, Jonathan Biggins.

A Night of Operatic Brilliance

The evening will feature performances by some of Australia’s most celebrated opera stars, including two exceptional sopranos, Stacey Alleaume and Nina Korbe. Stacey Alleaume, renowned for her versatility and mastery of demanding roles, has captivated audiences with her portrayals of Violetta Valéry in La Traviata, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Micaëla in Carmen. Her recent performance in Carmen during Opera Australia’s winter season was met with critical acclaim, solidifying her reputation as one of the country’s finest performers.

Joining her is the award-winning soprano and ABC radio presenter Nina Korbe, a proud Koa, Kuku Yalanji, and Wakka Wakka woman. Korbe made her professional debut as Maria in the 2022 West Side Story production for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour and has since become a rising star in the opera world. Looking ahead, Korbe will take on a leading role in the highly anticipated new Australian opera, The Drover’s Wife, a co-production between Opera Australia and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, set to premiere in 2026.

Adding to the evening’s allure is Vienna-based Australian mezzo-soprano Margaret Plummer, who recently shone as Prince Charming in the premiere of Massenet’s Cinderella. Plummer will also grace the stage later this summer in the trouser role of Hansel in Opera Australia’s production of Hansel & Gretel. These three leading ladies will be joined by tenor Diego Torre, celebrated for his powerful portrayal of Don José in Carmen, and baritone Simon Meadows, who delighted audiences as Figaro in The Barber of Seville.

A Musical Journey with the Opera Australia Orchestra

Under the baton of Alexander Briger, one of Australia’s most esteemed conductors, the Opera Australia Orchestra will present a program that showcases the best of the 2025 season while offering a sneak peek at what’s to come in 2026, as Opera Australia celebrates its 70th anniversary. Expect an evening filled with breathtaking arias, duets, and orchestral masterpieces that will leave audiences spellbound.
