Mountain Culture Beer Co. opens its first Brewpub in Melbourne

The wait is over for Melbourne craft beer enthusiasts! Mountain Culture Beer Co., the brewery that Aussie cricket captain Pat Cummins has a stake in, is set to open its first Melbourne venue on 11 July 2025.

This marks the fourth venue for the award-winning brewery and the first step in its expansion into two new states, with a Hobart venue set to follow later this month.

A Big Move for Mountain Culture

Mountain Culture Beer Co., founded in 2019 by husband-and-wife duo DJ and Harriet McCready, has come a long way from its humble beginnings in Katoomba, nestled in the Blue Mountains. Known for its innovative approach to craft beer and its ability to attract younger drinkers, the brand has grown rapidly, winning the GABS Hottest 100 three years in a row with its flagship Status Quo Pale Ale.

“This was a big move for Mountain Culture,” said co-founder and CEO DJ McCready. “We started as a humble brewpub in the Blue Mountains and expanded to Sydney, but Melbourne is quickly catching up as our biggest market. It’s never lost on us that the fans we first met in Katoomba are what built this brand into what it is today, and we hope to build a community that’s just as strong in Melbourne now that we have an incredible venue in Richmond.”

The Richmond Venue: A Slice of Melbourne

Located in the vibrant suburb of Richmond, the new brewpub is set to become a must-visit destination for beer lovers. “Richmond is a little slice of everything that’s great about Melbourne,” said co-founder Harriet McCready. “Good coffee everywhere, footy just up the road, live music next door, dumplings around the corner… The brewpub is arguably one of the most beautiful venues in Melbourne, and we are excited to open it up and throw a good old Mountain Culture party!”

The venue will serve Mountain Culture’s full range of beers, including their core lineup and limited releases. Fans can look forward to enjoying Status Quo Pale Ale, crowned Australia’s best craft beer three years running, alongside two brand-new beers released every Thursday.

A Menu with a Twist

The food menu at the Richmond venue promises to be just as exciting as the beer. Guests can expect Australian pub classics with a Mountain Culture twist, complemented by an onsite smoker delivering a taste of American BBQ. The menu also caters to a wide range of dietary preferences, offering gluten-free, vegetarian, and kids’ options to ensure everyone leaves satisfied.

From the Blue Mountains to the Nation

Mountain Culture’s journey began in Katoomba, where DJ and Harriet combined their love of hiking, mountain biking, and craft beer to create a unique brewpub experience. The brand’s rapid growth led to the opening of a second venue in Emu Plains, NSW, which also houses their largest brewing site.

In 2024, Mountain Culture welcomed its first investor, Aussie cricket captain Pat Cummins, who shares the brewery’s Blue Mountains roots and is a self-proclaimed fan of their beer. That same year, the brewery expanded into Sydney with a venue in Redfern and a co-branded space with Wildflower Brewing in Marrickville, aptly named “Village.”

Now, with venues in Melbourne and soon Hobart, Mountain Culture is cementing its place as a dominant force in Australia’s independent craft beer scene.

A Brand on the Rise

Mountain Culture’s success is no accident. Growing at an impressive 40% year on year, the brewery is renowned for its market-leading innovation and its ability to do things differently. Winning the GABS Hottest 100 every year they’ve entered is a testament to their quality and creativity.

As Mountain Culture continues to expand its footprint, it’s clear that this is a brand with its sights set on becoming a household name in Australia’s craft beer industry.
