Get ready to be blown away this September as Sydney Dance Company brings you Twofold, a dynamic double bill that’s set to dazzle at the Roslyn Packer Theatre from the 18th to the 28th.

Featuring the return of Rafael Bonachela’s critically acclaimed Impermanence and the world premiere of Melanie Lane’s groundbreaking Love Lock, this is a night you won’t want to miss.

First up, let’s talk about Bonachela’s Impermanence. This masterpiece first hit the stage in 2021 and has since wowed audiences both locally and internationally. Inspired by the raw beauty and devastation of the Australian bushfires and the Notre-Dame fire, Impermanence is a visceral exploration of life’s fleeting moments. The choreography is set to an evocative score by Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner, best known as a founder of the rock band The National and for his film scores in The Revenant and The Two Popes. The music, performed live by either the Australian String Quartet or the Partridge String Quartet, culminates in a haunting final movement with the track Another World by Mercury Prize winner Anohni.

Bonachela is pumped to bring Impermanence back to the stage, and why wouldn’t he be? “I’m delighted to bring Impermanence to the stage once more, and to pair this with Melanie Lane’s extraordinary new work, Love Lock. With two full ensemble works, it will be a night of epic proportions,” he says. Quite an understatement, right?

On the flip side of this double bill, we’ve got Melanie Lane’s Love Lock making its grand debut. Lane, an Aussie-Javanese choreographer known for her innovative work, is taking us on a futuristic ride with a re-imagined folk dance. Love Lock dives into the collective experiences of diverse cultures and our rapidly changing world, all while celebrating the unifying power of dance. The costumes, designed by the fabulous Akira Isogawa, are layered with texture and colour, making the performance a feast for the eyes. And don’t even get me started on the score by UK electronic artist Clark—it’s set to be an audacious auditory experience.

Lane is just as thrilled about this collaboration: “It is a thrill to be creating Love Lock with the artists of Sydney Dance Company… It’s an exciting opportunity that offers so much potential to harness the powerful energy of a large group of dancers. It made me think a lot about social dances, folk dances and community dances that celebrate what it means to connect with each other through our bodies and essentially what it means to be human.”

Let’s not forget that this double bill is not just a dance performance; it’s a celebration of artistic collaboration and creativity. Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela, and Melanie Lane have a history of working together, and their mutual respect and admiration are palpable. Lane previously collaborated with the company on her work WOOF in 2017, and here she is again, taking things to the next level.

So mark your calendars, folks. Whether you’re a dance aficionado or just looking for an unforgettable night out, Twofold is the show to catch. It’s not every day you get to witness such a powerhouse combination of talent, storytelling, and sheer artistic brilliance. See you at the Roslyn Packer Theatre!
