Opera Australia puts on spectacular new production of Aida as its winter season highlight

Opera Australia Aida

It was only last year that Opera Australia took over the beach at Coolangatta to perform what is right up there as one of the company’s largest and most epic productions to-date.

And now this winter, Aida – the epic tale of the Ethiopian princess by Giuseppe Verdi – is the headliner for the Australian opera company’s winter season, sure to knock the city over with another epic interpretation.

Making his debut with Opera Australia, director and designer, Davide Livermore will turn the famed Joan Sutherland Theatre in the Sydney Opera House into a newly reimagined, grand and large-scale production of the Egyptian desert, complete with stunning costumes to the score of Verdi himself.

Here’s a sneak at one of the scores from the production, sung in ’86 at La Scala in Italy by the legendary tenor himself, Luciano Pavarotti (RIP).

The new production of Aida will feature Opera Australia’s new integrated digital technologies, transporting the audience experience to a whole new level and marking the first stage of this exciting new development in theatrical staging. Coupled with Gianluca Falaschi’s magnificent costume designs, this brand new production is set to be a feast for the senses.

They’ve assembled a cast featuring some of the world’s best singers. American powerhouse soprano Amber Wagner, who made her OA debut in the 2016 Melbourne Ring Cycle, stunning audiences with the sheer beauty and size of her voice, will play Aida along with talented Australian soprano Natalie Aroyan who will be making her main-stage role debut as Aida in the second half of the season.

Joining them will be outstanding Italian tenor Riccardo Massi as Radame?s, direct from The Met in NYC where he sang the role to great acclaim, and, in her OA debut, the stunning French-Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Gabouri will play Amneris.

Aida tells the tell of the Ethiopian princess; a story of love so strong it defies enemy lines and is a tale of a kingdom in triumph and a nation in chains.
