How the LGBTIQA+ community can protect themselves from assault this summer

In June 2020, the nation was shocked to its core when three men were stabbed to death in Forbury Gardens in Reading, in broad daylight.  It turned out that the men, who had been enjoying socialising in the sunshine, were victims of a homophobic hate crime. From registered sex offenders to homophobic haters on the prowl, members of the LGBTQ+ community can be vulnerable just for being themselves, unfortunately.  If you’re sometimes nervous about going out, here are some tips for protecting yourself against assault this summer… Staying Safe in UK Bars and Clubs Clubs, pubs and bars can be great places to meet up with friends and to meet new people. While everybody should, of course, expect to visit these venues without fear of assault, this is sadly not always the case.  As well as violent hate crime assaults, shockingly, a third of gay men say that they have experienced sexual abuse or assaults while in pubs and bars in the UK.  While it’s hard to believe in 2022, ‘the panic defence’ has been used in a number of cases in which a member of the LGBTQ+ community has been assaulted. This is a defense whereby the defendant claims that he or she ‘panicked’ when in the presence of a member of the LGBTQ+ community and, therefore, committed the assault. The fact that this exists is testament to the dangers facing certain members of the community. Protecting yourself during a night out is vital and, there are a few things that you can do… Read More

How do same sex and heterosexual divorce rates compare?

History was made in the UK on the 13th of March 2014, when legislation was passed which would allow same sex couples to legally marry. This was a great step in the right direction for the LGBTQ+ community and a long time coming. Since the legislation was passed, plenty of data has been collected to spot divorce trends amongst couples. Sadly, figures show not every marriage lasts forever in neither same sex or straight marriages.  A divorce lawyer can deal with same sex divorces all the same, but how do divorce figures compare to heterosexual marriages? Let’s delve into more detail… Recent Divorce Figures When looking at divorce statistics, it’s important to bear in mind the fact that two years of on and off lockdowns, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic will without a doubt, have had an impact on this.  Some couples discovered that, having been forced to spend a huge amount of time together, they simply did not want to continue with the relationship after experiencing such an intense, weird and stressful time together.  Having said that, we are able to examine some of the facts and figures when it comes to divorce. Same Sex Marriages In the first 29 months following the UK legislation, the divorce rate for same sex marriages stood at just 1%. However, numbers would begin to rise fairly rapidly afterwards.  In 2020, 1,154 divorces were registered among same sex couples in the UK, a pretty steep increase of 40.4% from the previous year. The majority of these divorces… Read More

Queer drag queen

The National Gallery of Victoria is exploring Queerness in its full space exhibition Queer: stories from the NGV collection, which ends this month, 21 August. As they say, QUEER shines a light on the NGV Collection to examine and reveal the queer stories works of art can tell. This exhibition of works from the NGV Collection spans historical eras and diverse media including painting, drawing, photography, decorative arts, fashion, video, sculpture, and design and explores queerness as an expression of sexuality and gender, a political movement, a sensibility, and as an attitude that defies fixed definition. And this month through closing weekend of the exhibition, the Gallery will host a schedule of free programs, talks, entertainment, and late-night access to the exhibition in case you missed it or need another visit. And if you fancy a party, well the NGV has that, too. The NGV Queer Climax: Closing Weekend Party is a free event hosted by Queer performer and Drag Queen, Aysha Buffet filled with an impressive line-up of iconic queer performers, bars courtesy of Yering Station (drinks available for purchase), and late-night access to QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection. The colour and excitement of Sydney Mardi Gras 2022: a photo story

Mardi Gras Parade 2022

The annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras went off with a bang in 2022, taking over – yet again – the Sydney Cricket Ground in lieu of its usual Oxford Street route due to the pandemic. But despite news of war, bad weather and general average news around the world, the crowd gathered in celebration and love for one and all, shining a light on diversity, inclusion and equality regardless of who you are and who you love. Here are some highlights from the evening.

Where to stay in Sydney for Mardi Gras this March

Rooftop pool day time 2

Before we start, good luck. There are literally movements of people who book years ahead, BUT, it’s worth knowing where the competition’s at in case you’re in the booking mood of planning for the annual Sydney Mardi Gras in 2023. The Pullman Hotel sits at the base of Oxford Street at what in pandemic times, used to be the ‘holding pen’ – for lack of a better term – for all the colours of the rainbow before they’d take to their choreographed marches along the now renowned route. Things are different in 2022 thanks to the pandemic and the parade will be in a loop around the Sydney Cricket Ground, BUT, when it comes to sorting out where to stay, an overnighter at the Pullman might be just what you need for stumbling in super late after it. Or early. The hotel has on offer a Mardi Gras package, offering for $285 accommodation, breakfast and parking. Ideal for those sore-headed Sunday and Monday mornings before the next party. For more, head to the Pullman Hyde Park website.
