As of Monday, December 1, the highly anticipated Rick Stein at Coogee Beach has officially opened, bringing a taste of Rick Stein’s celebrated seafood philosophy to one of Sydney’s most iconic coastal destinations.
Perched above the shoreline of Coogee Beach, this Australian flagship restaurant promises a dining experience that celebrates the ocean, simplicity, and the finest local produce.
Led by the legendary Rick and Sarah Stein, alongside head chef Colin Chun, the restaurant embodies Rick’s passion for fresh seafood, simply prepared. “Coogee Beach feels like the perfect home for us in Australia,” Rick Stein shared. “Its connection to the ocean, its sense of ease, and its warmth are everything I love about cooking seafood. We’re delighted to now be welcoming guests and we look forward to the summer ahead.”
Oceanic menu
The opening menu is a love letter to Australia’s coastal bounty, with seafood hand-selected by Frank Theodore of Get Fish at the Sydney Fish Market. Guests can indulge in standout dishes such as sashimi, fruits de mer, oysters Charentaise, and a twice-baked crab soufflé. Other highlights include Coffs Harbour king prawn cocktail, lobster raviolo, and the indulgent rock lobster Thermidor. For those seeking Rick’s signature classics, favorites like Rick’s Fish & Chips, Newlyn Fish Pie, and Singapore Blue Swimmer Crab are also on offer.
Desserts evoke the nostalgia of summer, with options like a Black Forest trifle and a pavlova topped with fresh raspberries, providing the perfect sweet ending to a seafood feast.
Food at its best
Head chef Colin Chun brings over 20 years of international culinary expertise to the team, with a career spanning prestigious roles at Hilton Sydney, Pullman, and W Taipei. A long-time admirer of Rick Stein’s approach, Chun is dedicated to showcasing Australia’s finest coastal produce with dishes that emphasize clarity, seasonality, and respect for ingredients. “Opening Rick Stein at Coogee Beach is a privilege,” Chun said. “Rick’s influence on my cooking runs deep, and it’s exciting to bring that shared philosophy to this beautiful location. This week marks the beginning of something very special.”
And the drinks?
The drinks menu has been thoughtfully curated to complement the seafood-led dishes. The wine list features a mix of Australian and international producers, including Brokenwood’s ‘Rick Stein’ Semillon Blend, Yabby Lake, and Domaine Maire & Fils from France. The cocktail menu offers refreshing, ocean-inspired creations like the Coastal Martini and Australian Negroni. A special section, ‘Drinks with Sas,’ pays homage to Rick’s wife, Sas, with playful and elegant cocktails such as the Coogee Breeze and Sas’ Bellini.
Inspired by the sea
The restaurant’s interiors, designed by Sarah Stein and Kate Greenwood of Salter Brothers Hospitality in collaboration with Studioaria, reflect the natural beauty of Coogee Beach. Woven textures, olive trees, and natural materials create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Guests can choose from a variety of seating options, including a dining room, courtyard terrace, and bar seating, perfect for long lunches or relaxed evenings by the sea.
Art by Australian artist Brigit Thomas adorns the walls, featuring marine-inspired pieces like a giant squid and a shimmering school of fish. These artworks bring the energy of the ocean into the dining space, tying together the restaurant’s coastal ethos with artistry and character.
At the heart of the restaurant is an open kitchen, offering guests a glimpse into the culinary magic. A dedicated cold bar for seafood and a ten-seat kitchen table provide an intimate view of the action. For private gatherings, ‘The Snug’ offers a cozy space for up to eight guests, ideal for celebratory meals or casual fish and chips after a day at the beach.
Rick Stein at Coogee Beach is now open at the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, offering a dining experience that captures the essence of coastal living. Reservations are available online, and with summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to savor the flavors of the sea in this stunning new venue.
