We spoke to Alana Maria about her jewellery approach. Here’s how it went…

manufacturing model helps us minimise waste and gives us full insight and control over our production process – from sourcing and production to packaging and transporting. However, sustainability is a journey, not a destination, and we are always looking for ways to make our practices and products more sustainable.

What is your favourite piece that you’ve ever designed and why does it hold special significance for you?

I have one piece of jewellery that I’ve not taken off since the day I made it. It’s the very first ring I ever made from scratch. It’s a silver ring with a polished finish and while it’s not the prettiest piece I’ve made, it carries huge sentimental value. It’s my lucky charm!

What sets Alana Maria Jewellery apart from other jewellery brands in the market?

I think we are one of the few jewellery brands in Australia that make most of their pieces locally and to order. I’m so proud of my team of 15 jewellers who make our pieces on-site in our workshop here in Sydney. It’s such a privilege to constantly be surrounded by this amazing team of young women who inspire me every day and remind me of why I started this business.

Could you share some of your future plans for Alana Maria Jewellery?

Of course! We recently launched our take on permanent jewellery – AMJ Forever – which our customers absolutely love. It’s such a fun concept that we would like to explore more and bring to other stores and venues in the near future.

What advice would you give to budding jewellery designers looking to start their own brand?

I would say one of the most important things to do before starting your own jewellery business is to define what sets your designs apart from others in the market. Try to develop a signature style that reflects your creativity and resonates with your audience. This not only shields you from falling for temporary trends but also cultivates a strong brand identity which will help your business last in the long run.
