In June 2020, the nation was shocked to its core when three men were stabbed to death in Forbury Gardens in Reading, in broad daylight.  It turned out that the men, who had been enjoying socialising in the sunshine, were victims of a homophobic hate crime. From registered sex offenders to homophobic haters on the prowl, members of the LGBTQ+ community can be vulnerable just for being themselves, unfortunately.  If you’re sometimes nervous about going out, here are some tips for protecting yourself against assault this summer… Staying Safe in UK Bars and Clubs Clubs, pubs and bars can be great places to meet up with friends and to meet new people. While everybody should, of course, expect to visit these venues without fear of assault, this is sadly not always the case.  As well as violent hate crime assaults, shockingly, a third of gay men say that they have experienced sexual abuse or assaults while in pubs and bars in the UK.  While it’s hard to believe in 2022, ‘the panic defence’ has been used in a number of cases in which a member of the LGBTQ+ community has been assaulted. This is a defense whereby the defendant claims that he or she ‘panicked’ when in the presence of a member of the LGBTQ+ community and, therefore, committed the assault. The fact that this exists is testament to the dangers facing certain members of the community. Protecting yourself during a night out is vital and, there are a few things that you can do… Read More

Gay and Loathing in Bris Vegas: Coming to screens in 2019

Gay Loathing Bris Vegas 1

There’s a 14-part web series coming to the internet in 2019 that everyone – especially the gays – needs to watch. It’s about Australia’s most fervently boringly brilliant city: Brisbane. But more notably, what exactly the marginal percentage of people who identify themselves as part of the city’s LGBTIQ community do to fill the time, and how that all unfolds. Set in the historic city of Brisbane, Australia, Gay and Loathing in Bris Vegas explores the lives of seven central characters over the course of two days in the cul-de-sacs of where they live. The blueprint for the characters are portrayed by local Brisbane actors Sean Dennehy, Leigh Buchanan, Paul Newlands, Michael Deed, Josh Walker, Peter Wood, Jake Orlando-Cowan is based on the comedy scripts written by John B. Uren and Craig Rossiter. It all explores what happens when the most exciting thing in town is a man-made beach. It tells the self-deprecating tale of a popular-with-the-gays city in a tracksuit where sequins come to die and how the Brisgays survive. They go to breakfast, they glare. They go to brunch, they loathe. They go to Instagram, they judge. They go to Grindr, they regret. They end up at Sporty’s and wonder why. Presented by Cloudland Pictures, “It’s the Kath and Kim of gay Brisbane. It’s suburban Australia brought to life with hysterical comedy”, says Leigh Buchanan, who portrays Garette, a bored homemaker who loves to drink and is the partner of Nathan (played by Sean Dennehy). This is why gays needs guns

Gays Guns SBS Viceland

We know a lot about America. Their president is scary, their gun politics are even scarier and the fact that fact year, 52 people were murdered because they identified as LGBTIQ+[1] is abhorrent. That’s why ‘The Pink Pistols‘ exist. Given the number of gay hate crime acts in the US has never been higher, there’s a growing legion of people who identify as LGBTIQ+ fighting back with bullets. Some call them the ‘GAY NRA’, but more affectionately, ‘The Pink Pistols’ will do. They explicitly advocate the exercise of Second Amendment rights for self-protection – that thing Americans are nuts about – but for good cause. This year on SBS Viceland, in a story around the fact it’s now two years since 49 people were shot and killed at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Walkley nominated investigative journalist for The Feed and host of SBS’s Mardi Gras broadcast, Patrick Abboud, takes to the camera in unprecedented access to The Pink Pistols in a special half-hour documentary. With more than 45 chapters across the US and at least 10,000 shooters, the organisation – under the slogan ‘pick on someone your own calibre’ – say they are one of the most rapidly growing pro-gun groups in the US. March for Our Lives put America’s gun problem in perspective like never before, when thousands of school students flooded the streets nationwide urging lawmakers to heed their calls and enact stricter gun laws. But The Pink Pistols don’t necessarily want tighter gun control. Their motivation to bear arms stems from the continued… Read More
