Fresh from the Chicago Sydney run, Melbourne had it comin’.
The array of talent taking over the stage at Melbourne’s Arts Centre in this season’s production of Chicago is one to be reckoned with.
Casey Donnovan, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Jason Donovan take on the lead roles in the production made famous for its sensational take on lovers’ revenge, salacious dance routines and catchy numbers set to the backdrop of 50s-esque glamour.
A true New York City Institution, the production has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and the slickest dancing in town. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, CHICAGO’s sexy, sassy score includes “All That Jazz” and “Razzle Dazzle”.
From the moment of Donovan’s emergence, she capitalises on the role as Mama Murphy; using her aesthetic and vocal prowess to really work strike fear into her cellmates.
Alongside the likes of Natalie whose interpretation of Roxy Hart is one to watch the result of at this year’s instalment of the Helpmann Awards; the duo are engaging, enthralling and enticing; proving unequivocally why this production strikes a soft spot in the hearts of everyone.
