If sport is your thing or you just enjoy a day out at something new, you are spoilt for choice in Australia as there are a whole host of major sporting events where the eyes of the world are on the country.
Here is a list of four events which should be in your diary as possible events to visit in 2019.
Australian Open
The Australian Open is the opening Grand Slam of the year in tennis. Held annual in Melbourne, the world’s leading players all look to succeed at Melbourne Park in a tournament which is usually played in sweltering conditions. Roger Federer was victorious in the men’s final in 2018 when he beat Marin Cilic, while in the women’s final, Caroline Wozniacki got the better of Simona Halep. If you are lucky enough to get tickets to one of the showcase courts, you are likely to see the leading players in the draw, however, don’t be put off purchasing ground passes as in the early rounds of the Grand Slam there are still plenty of well-known faces on the outside courts so you should be able to see some top class tennis.
Australian Grand Prix

The start of the F1 season begins in Melbourne every season with the Australian Grand Prix in March. This event has been held at Albert Park since 1996 and often attracts a crowd of over 100,000 on race day. Motor racing isn’t for everyone, but if you do appreciate these magnificent cars and the skill it takes from these drivers to negotiate the track at the speed they travel, you will love this grand prix.

There is no biggest Test series in world cricket than the Ashes between Australia and England. The latest renewal, which begins next August, is held in England, therefore, you could organise a great trip across to Europe to take in a game match or two. Australia are 6/5 in the cricket betting to win the five-match series in what should be a close encounter. If England is too far for you, Australia are in action at home in a Test series against India in January.
Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is known as ‘the race that stops a nation’ and even if you are not a big horse racing fan, you are likely to have heard of this event. The 3200-metre contest is held annually in November at Flemington Park during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest two-mile handicap run anywhere in the world, therefore, it attracts some of the best horses from around the globe. In 2017, 90,536 people were there to see Rekindling become the first three-year-old to win the Melbourne Cup since 1941. If you are looking to attend Flemington Park for this fantastic race day, take a look on the racecourse’s website for the dress code as certain enclosures are very strict on what you can wear.
