Illusion Dressing… Why did they not teach us this in school?!
Have you ever wondered why some outfits just make you feel amazing, and other outfits you just don’t feel great in at all? The secret is how to dress in illusion which involves putting together a balanced and flattering silhouette that highlights your natural shape.
Understanding Illusion Dressing
The idea behind illusion dressing is to create the ideal proportions in your outfits. The ultimate goal is to look like an hourglass, meaning the width of your shoulders and the width of your hips are the same, and you have a defined waist. Now, this doesn’t take magic, we just need some logic and a few guidelines to follow.
In my 20s and 30s, I perfected this technique as a young mum of four boys. And I learned what was best suited for me, what I loved about my body and what I didn’t want people to pay attention to in my body. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned through the years.
Emphasise Your Waist
Defining a waist can help to create a defined silhouette. Wear belts or wear clothes that cinch at the waist so your shape is more hourglass. Accentuating your waistline can be done with high waisted pants or skirts.
Use Necklaces and Tops to Draw Attention
Wearing a statement necklace or a top featuring a narrowed neckline can draw the eye up to your upper third of your body — to your face and neckline. In case you don’t want to draw attention to your hips or legs, this technique is well suited.
Choose the Right Shoes and Trousers
Wearing shoes with different designs or colors will attract the eye lower, and will help to balance out the outfit and draw emphasis towards the lower third. This is a technique that can be used to balance a broader shoulder, or a fuller bust.
Camouflaging the Midsection with Layered Tops or adding structure to Oversized clothes.
Layering can be a trying thing if you’re conscious about your belly area but want to avoid bulk. The Envi Band could be just the tool here. As it helps tucking helps disguise the midsection and keep the top from getting bulky, while it also helps to tuck the top into a skirt or pants and keep the front flat.
If you have a petite frame, oversized clothes can sometimes overwhelm your figure and your shape will be hard to spot. The Envi Band can help to give you a blouson effect, just above the hips or waist, which will help to give structure and define the silhouette more.
Illusion dressing is a great way to feel and look good every single day. By learning and using these simple techniques you can make beautiful, balanced, flattering outfits that fit your body type. It’s not about your body changing to fit the clothes, it’s about the clothes fitting and looking flattering with your body.
