The spare parts to take on a road trip

Road trips can be a lot of fun. They’re one of the most recommended holiday ideas to try out, and you can go anywhere you want at any kind of speed you want, with everything you could need on the backseat within easy reach! Sure, a road trip places a lot more emphasis on the journey rather than any of the destinations, but that’s what’s so great about them.

After all, the car you bundle yourself and your friends or your loved one into is your own vehicle, and you have to make the experience enjoyable all on your own. No airplane luxury food, no pods you can sleep in, and no replacement bus service if the train stops working! And that takes a bit of preparation – cars can easily break down, especially if they’re going hundreds or maybe even thousands of miles, and there’s no one around but you to fix the problem. So with all that in mind, here’s the spare parts you should pack along with you.

Make sure you’ve got a tool kit

Before you even think about investing in any spare parts you think might come in handy, you’re going to need to buy yourself a good tool kit. If you don’t have the right tools, you’ll have no way to fit these spare pieces in if you have a breakdown, and you’re not going to want to risk your hands and fingers on a car engine.

Not just any tool kit, but one with items that can be generalised to the most common breakages within a vehicle. You’re going to need things like spanners ranging from 8mm to about 17mm, a set of screwdrivers, some pliers, an allen key or two, a foot pump, a roll of duct tape, and a bit of oil to loosen things up when you need to do some repairs.

Take a spare tyre

A spare tyre is always a good thing to have in the back of your car, but you’re definitely going to need one if you’re off on a 1000 mile trip or so. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier to get your hands on the right kind of tyre than you think: there’s all kinds of wheel and tyre packages out there which you can easily find online. You can even filter by car type and model, just to be sure.

A spare headlight

Headlights are some of the easiest parts of the car to crack, chip, and break completely, especially if you’re driving through mountains with potential falling snows. Be sure to take at least one spare headlight along with you, in case of an accident, as you’re legally unable to drive if any of the outside lights on your car are broken.

There’s a lot of spare parts you might need to get your hands on, so make sure you’ve got the most essential with you on a road trip.
