Change The Decor
Decorating is one of the quickest ways to add your own stamp on to a new home. It’s very rare to come across of property that you’ve moved into that is already exactly to your tastes and preferences. Unless you opt to buy a brand new home where you get to pick and choose things such as the kitchen, chances are there are a fair few things you would alter in order to feel at home. This can lead to homesickness quickly and sometimes mean that you feel a little lost in your new place. When you’ve moved abroad it’s even more essential to get the homely feeling, of course after a large move it’s not always possible to decorate everything and everywhere all at once so try focusing on one main area, or maybe just consider adding a fresh coat of paint to some of the walls.
Get Your belongings Sooner Rather Than Later
When moving abroad it’s not uncommon to use storage to keep your belongings safe while you transition to the new location. The sooner you can get some familiar items and belongings into your new home the better it will help to create a familiar homely feeling. It’s particularly important if you are moving with children, as having familiar items in their room can help to alleviate homesickness. If you’re moving to start completely fresh, it could be a good idea to create some wall art with family pictures and places that remind you of home.
Familiar Smells
Everyone has a smell or several smells that remind them of certain people, places, pets and even homes. This means it is a great tool for making a move to a new house easier and more homely. You could try cooking a favourite meal, lighting a candle that reminds you of your old home, or even buy some plants that make your home smell like your moms. Smells are one of the most common ways that people and pets feel settled so if you do move with he family pet, taking a blanket that smells like your old house could help with them settling.
