What to see this Christmas at Sadler’s Wells

This Christmas, Sadler’s Wells is rolling out the red carpet for a festive extravaganza that’ll warm even the chilliest of hearts. As London’s winter wonderland cranks up the charm, the iconic theatre is pulling out all the stops with a trio of enchanting performances that promise to dazzle audiences from every walk of life.

First up, we have Birmingham Rep’s timeless treasure, The Snowman, making its annual appearance at the Peacock Theatre. Running from 23 November 2024 to 4 January 2025, this perennial favorite is basically the theatrical equivalent of a warm mug of cocoa on a frosty day. The adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ beloved picture book brings to life the tale of a boy and his frosty friend, with Howard Blake’s iconic “Walking in the Air” soundtrack whisking you away on a snow-filled journey. With live orchestration, vibrant choreography by Robert North, and dazzling designs courtesy of Ruari Murchison, it’s an experience that’ll leave you feeling all kinds of nostalgic.

Meanwhile, back at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Matthew Bourne’s audacious Swan Lake is set to shake things up from 3 December 2024 to 26 January 2025. Long before “disruptor” was a buzzword, Bourne was flipping the script on Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece by replacing the traditional female swans with a ferociously talented male ensemble. It’s bold, it’s brilliant, and it’s back to inspire a new generation of dance enthusiasts. Boasting more awards than you can shake a pointe shoe at, including a trio of Tony Awards and an Olivier, this is one sensational show not to be missed.

And if you’re looking for a digital dose of festive cheer, Ballo Arthur Pita’s The Little Match Girl is your golden ticket. Available on Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage, this high-quality film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s cherished tale is perfect for schools, offering pupils a front-row seat to world-class dance without leaving the classroom. Streaming from 7 October 2024 to 31 January 2025, teachers can access this snowy saga—complete with educational resources—absolutely free. The tale, with its poignant message of hope and kindness, is brought to life with music, dance, and a sprinkle of unconventional instruments.

Whether you’re a die-hard dance aficionado or just looking to add a bit of sparkle to your Christmas season, Sadler’s Wells has something to tickle your fancy. So, why not swap the standard Christmas movie marathon for a night at the theatre? After all, you can only watch so many re-runs of holiday classics before the urge to experience some live magic takes over. Grab your tickets, settle in, and let Sadler’s Wells transport you to a world where swans, snowmen, and stories dance amidst the holiday glow.
