Get ready for the music of the night to sweep across Sydney Harbour! Opera Australia has just dropped the curtain on the casting for its highly anticipated 2026 season of The Phantom of the Opera, and it promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
Returning to the iconic floating stage from 27 March to 3 May, this production is set to be one of the city’s biggest cultural highlights. With a mix of global royalty, rising stars, and an incredible discovery story, the cast is ready to bring Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece to life under the stars.
A Stellar Line-Up
Leading the charge is Australian musical theatre royalty, the celebrated soprano Amy Manford, who will step into the shoes of Christine Daaé. Amy is no stranger to the role, having attracted global recognition for her portrayal of the Phantom’s protégé in both the recent Australian tour and the prestigious West End production in London. Her return to the role for this unique outdoor setting is a major win for Sydney audiences.
Joining her is rising star Jarrod Draper as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. A proud Wiradjuri man born in Orange, NSW, Draper has been making waves in the industry since becoming the first Indigenous man to graduate from WAAPA’s musical theatre program. You might recognise him from Moulin Rouge, Sunset Boulevard, or his recent turn as Munkustrap in Cats.
The New Face Behind the Mask
Perhaps the most exciting news is the casting of The Phantom himself. In a true “star is born” moment, newcomer Jake Lyle will slip on the world’s most famous mask.
At just 22 years old, Jake is making his professional musical theatre debut as one of the industry’s most iconic characters. Hailing from Gladstone, Queensland, he is still studying Classical Voice at the Queensland Conservatorium. Music Supervisor Guy Simpson discovered Jake during ensemble auditions, where his raw talent immediately stood out.
“Everyone loves to say they’ve ‘discovered’ someone, but during the auditions for the Ensemble, a young singer named Jake Lyle caught our attention,” Simpson shared. “I think Jake has a stellar future and we will all remember his Opera Australia debut for a long time to come.”
A Spectacle on the Harbour
This production marks the debut at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour for all three leads. They face the epic task of performing on Australia’s largest outdoor stage, floating above the water with the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as their backdrop.
Directed by Simon Phillips, with elaborate set and costume design by Gabriela Tylesova, this version of Phantom brings a whole new level of spectacle to the legendary musical. Imagine the chandelier crashing, the masquerade ball swirling, and the haunting music echoing across the water—all accompanied by a live orchestra and nightly fireworks.
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is the only place in the world where you can experience this grand-scale production in such a breathtaking setting. With pop-up bars and restaurants adding to the festival atmosphere, it is set to be an unforgettable night out.
Whether you are a die-hard “Phan” or experiencing the magic for the first time, this 2026 season is shaping up to be an unmissable event. Secure your spot and prepare to be mesmerised by the music of the night.
