World Chocolate Day is here on Friday 7 July, and it’s time to indulge in some mouth-watering chocolate treats. Whether it’s a creamy chocolate mousse, a rich chocolate cake or a classic chocolate brownie, there’s something for everyone on this sweet occasion. We had the pleasure of speaking with world-renowned pastry chef Kirsten Tibballs for a fun Q&A session about all things chocolate. Here’s what she had to say: Tell us something about chocolate that we might not know “Chocolate is responsible for one of time’s greatest savers – microwaves. A scientist working in WWII noticed a correlation between his melting chocolate bar and a magnetron. He put the two together and a microwave was born!” What’s your go-to dessert when invited to a dinner party & why? “If I am bringing dessert for a dinner party, I always go for a chocolate option, which is continually well received. A yummy chocolate and Chantilly cream trifle or a decadent chocolate tart served with a dollop of cream is usually a crowd pleaser!” Favourite savoury dish to cook: “I love making gnocchi, and when my son was younger we’d spend a whole afternoon together doing this. With the days getting cooler and shorter, what better way to warm up than with a belly-full of delicious comfort food! And more precisely, freshly made, hot mini churros covered in your favourite childhood toppings! We’re talking Nerds, fairy bread and chocolate crackles – all the good stuff, straight from the nineties! Amping up the nostalgia, chocolateria San Churro has launched a new range of snack packs that will bring back all your favourite childhood memories. The three new packs are part of the exciting ‘Throwback menu’. Take your pick from the menu with mini traditional churros sprinkled with iconic strawberry and grape Nerds; or playful fairy bread, specklies and white chocolate ice cream; or last but definitely not least, chocolate crackle chunks and milk chocolate ice cream. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, all snack packs are drizzled with a choice of milk, dark or white couverture chocolate. To sweeten the deal, San Churro is offering nineties pricing on the ‘Throwback menu’ every Thursday until 28 May, 2020. Instead of the usual $17, the ‘Throwback’ churros snack packs drop to $11 between the hours 4pm to 8pm. Chocolate enthusiasts can also indulge in signature hot chocolate favourites with a twist, with San Churro rolling out four new ‘Throwback Hot Chocolates’, each sprinkled with sweet treats. The range includes a Nerds, fairy bread, chocolate crackle and honeycomb – all topped with whipped cream.

In 2025, the art world will witness a remarkable event at the National Gallery as “Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300?1350” opens its doors in spring, marking the 200th anniversary of the institution. This exhibition promises an unprecedented reunion of paintings by some of the most celebrated Italian artists of the 14th century, artworks that have been scattered across the globe for centuries. Highlighting this unique collection are masterpieces in gold ground, many originally part of larger compositions, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the innovative spirit of Western painting tradition from this era. The spotlight of the exhibition is the coming together of several panels from the revolutionary double-sided altarpiece, the Maestà, painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna for the cathedral in Siena. Recognized as the first double-sided altarpiece in Western art, this narrative shift in art will be showcased along with other significant pieces from the ensemble.
