Sydney’s music lovers, prepare to be moved. The Sydney Philharmonia Choirs have announced their 2026 season, and it’s a breathtaking lineup of choral masterpieces, bold new commissions, and unforgettable performances in some of the city’s most iconic and atmospheric venues.
From the grandeur of the Sydney Opera House to the industrial charm of White Bay Power Station, this season promises to uplift, inspire, and celebrate the power of the human voice.
A Year of Milestones
2026 marks two significant anniversaries for the Choirs. It’s the 25th year of VOX, their acclaimed young-adult ensemble, and two decades of artistic leadership from Associate Music Director Dr. Elizabeth Scott. To celebrate, VOX will take center stage in World O World, a special anniversary concert in November featuring ethereal global choral works and three brand-new commissions.
Artistic & Music Director Brett Weymark reflects on the milestone: “VOX has grown into a dynamic force, championing Australian composers and contemporary choral music. Their 25th anniversary concert will be a highlight of the year, showcasing their incredible talent and the creativity of our local composers.”
A Season of Choral Masterpieces
The 2026 season is packed with some of the most beloved works in the choral repertoire, alongside fresh compositions that push the boundaries of the art form. Highlights include:
- Gloria! Vivaldi, Bach & Handel (March): A Baroque extravaganza at Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay, featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Cantata No.12, and Handel’s Dixit Dominus.
- Bach’s St John Passion (April): A stirring Easter performance at the Sydney Opera House, led by Brett Weymark and featuring a stellar cast of soloists.
- Duruflé’s Requiem & Poulenc’s Gloria (May): Two elegant French masterpieces, paired with a new work by Australian composer Carl Vine, performed by the 400-voice Festival Chorus.
- ChorusOz Sydney | Aida (June): Verdi’s opera highlights brought to life by over 800 singers in a joyous celebration of music-making at the Sydney Opera House.
- Britten’s War Requiem (October): A powerful and poignant masterpiece interweaving Latin Mass and WWI poetry, performed by a 400-strong choir and orchestra.
- Handel’s Messiah (December): A Sydney tradition, this Christmas favorite will fill the Opera House with baroque splendor and festive cheer.
Beyond Sydney
The Choirs’ influence will extend far beyond the city in 2026. They’ll embark on a UK tour, performing at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester Cathedral, premiering new Australian works on the international stage. Closer to home, they’ll return to Perth for ChorusOz Perth | Carmina Burana, a collaboration with the Perth Symphony Orchestra that promises to be a rollicking good time.
A Commitment to the Future
The Sydney Philharmonia Choirs are not just about celebrating the past—they’re also investing in the future. Their Emerging Composer Awards and Conducting Fellowships, launched in 2025, will continue to nurture the next generation of musical leaders. Executive Director Matthew Beale says, “These initiatives have been life-changing for participants, and we’re excited to build on their success in 2026.”
