Sydney Dance Company’s 2025 program kicks off in spectacular style with Rafael Bonachela’s critically acclaimed Somos, and honestly, we couldn’t be more thrilled.
This vibrant masterpiece is not just coming back—it’s heading to Melbourne for its highly anticipated debut at the Arts Centre from 13–23 March, before gracing the Sydney Dance Company’s Neilson Studio from 27 March–6 April. If you missed the 2023 sold-out world premiere (shame on you!), here’s your chance to witness what all the buzz is about.
Somos, which means “we are” in Spanish, is infused with Bonachela’s deep connection to his heritage. It’s a raw and passionate adventure built on evocative solos, heartfelt duets, and intricate trios, all dripping with that unmistakable Spanish flair. Inspired by the works of legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, Somos pays homage to strong women, Latin music, and the rich cultural tapestry of Spain. Oh, and if you’re into soundtracks that scream “iconic,” you’ll be pleased to know this one features some of the most phenomenal Hispanic women artists. A vibe, right?
The performance is as intimate as it is powerful, with a set and costume design by Kelsey Lee and lighting design by Damien Cooper, brilliantly enhancing the sensual artistry onstage. Originally conceived within the cozy confines of the Neilson Studio, the in-the-round staging breaks down barriers between dancers and audience—so close, you might think you were part of the choreography! And don’t even get us started on the emotions—you’ll be holding your breath with each move as the dancers pour their hearts (and precisely timed footwork) into every beat.
For the Melbourne premiere, we’ll see fresh talent in the Company ensemble, including Mathilda Ballantyne, Mali Comlekci, Sonrisa Hubbard, Eka Perunicic, and Sam Winkler—get ready, because they’re about to dazzle. Meanwhile, Sydney audiences will enjoy the full experience, complete with Bar Boca, the company’s buzzing pop-up tapas bar. Nothing says “dance and culture” like a glass of wine and a plate of jamón, right?
Whether you’re catching it in Melbourne or Sydney, Somos promises to sweep you off your feet (figuratively, unless you decide to join in mid-show). It’s passion, beauty, vulnerability, and strength all rolled into one unforgettable performance. Get your tickets, and prepare to be utterly mesmerised. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
