In the vibrant suburb of Artarmon, where the laid-back charm of Sydney’s Inner West meets the attitude of the North Shore, a new gem has emerged, promising to delight locals with its unique fusion of cafe and cocktail culture.

Welcome to Buckle + Depot, a bistro and distillery that is not just a place to grab a bite or a drink, but a destination to pause and play.

Having successfully completed its soft opening on 8 October, the first part of this dynamic duo, Buckle Cafe Distillery, is set for its grand unveiling on Tuesday, 22 October. Nestled within a stunning glass atrium adjacent to the heritage-listed 1 Frederick Street, the 150-seater venue is designed to offer an inclusive experience that caters to the diverse tastes of the Lower North Shore community.

General Manager James Peters and Executive Chef Johnny Sercombe have meticulously crafted an environment that effortlessly bridges the worlds of cafe and cocktail culture. “We wanted to create a venue that seamlessly connects cafe and cocktail culture, where anyone can come to pause or play,” explains Peters. This ethos is reflected in both the design and menu, creating a transformative space that evolves from day to night.

Under the culinary guidance of Johnny Sercombe, whose impressive resume boasts stints at Merivale, Solotel, and Applejack, the menu is a testament to quality and versatility. Brunch-goers can enjoy classic options such as the Bacon & Egg Roll, Avocado On Toast, and Corn Fritters. As the day transitions to evening, heartier dishes like the Reuben Sandwich, Tomato Penne Pasta, and Rump Steak take centre stage, offering something for every palate from noon until dinner.

Beyond the menu, Buckle’s dual vibe is embodied in the venue’s very heart: “Phoebe,” a 150L Copper Pot Still. This gleaming centrepiece not only adds a touch of intrigue but is tasked with distilling Buckle’s very own whisky, gin, and vodka. Complementing the distillery is a thoughtfully curated cocktail list by mixologist James Peters, featuring house exclusives like the Spiced Honey Daiquiri and the Buckle x Black Market Espresso Martini.

No visit would be complete without indulging in Buckle’s Happy Hour, launching in late November. From 5-6 pm every Monday to Friday, patrons can enjoy Buckle Gin or Vodka with a mixer, pints of beer, or wine by the glass, all for just $10, making it the perfect way to unwind as the day cools down.

The venue’s name pays homage to Frank Buckle, a first-grade cricketer turned industrial architect who designed the heritage building next door. His legacy of defying convention and embracing life’s freedoms is mirrored in Buckle’s ethos: offering a space where you can choose how to live your moments, whether you’re seeking relaxation or revelry.

While Buckle Cafe Distillery has already begun to capture hearts, anticipation builds for its sister venue, Depot Brewery, set to open its doors in late November. Stay tuned for more on this exciting addition.

In Artarmon, Buckle + Depot is more than just a venue; it’s a testament to the art of living well, inviting locals to savour each moment, sip-by-sip and bite-by-bite.
