New opera about Australia debuts in Victoria Australia

In an enchanting fusion of music and storytelling, Victorian Opera is set to dazzle audiences with Eucalyptus: The Opera, a groundbreaking new work that brings the ethereal beauty of the Australian bush to life.

In collaboration with Opera Australia, Perth Festival, and Brisbane Festival, this opera is the creation of renowned composer Jonathan Mills and acclaimed librettist Meredith Oakes, inspired by Murray Bail’s Miles Franklin-winning novel.

Performing at the majestic Palais Theatre in St Kilda from October 16 to 19, Eucalyptus: The Opera invites viewers into a magical eucalyptus forest, where love, longing, and a touch of fairy tale magic weave a compelling narrative. The opera follows Ellen, a young woman living under the protective watch of her father, Holland, in a world reminiscent of a modern-day Rapunzel. Her secluded life takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of a mysterious Stranger, who opens her eyes to the possibilities beyond her secluded existence.

Sir Jonathan Mills, celebrated for his ability to translate vivid tales into lyrical masterpieces, has crafted a score that captures the essence of the Australian landscape. With musical cues from native wildlife, Mills transforms the iconic eucalyptus trees into vibrant characters, allowing audiences to experience the intertwining of love and nature. Directed by the esteemed Michael Gow, the opera promises a visual and auditory feast, enhanced by the rich soundscape created by Orchestra Victoria and the Victorian Opera Chorus, under the baton of maestro Tahu Matheson.

Michael Gow, reflecting on the production, remarked on the collaborative spirit that brings this opera to the stage: “It is so exciting to have so many producing partners, singers, music staff and design team all collaborating together with a composer and librettist to bring a new work into existence. At the same time, how humbling is the trust and responsibility of being given this opportunity. All in front of a live audience.”

Leading the cast is the captivating Australian soprano Desiree Frahn, in the role of Ellen. She is joined by the distinguished baritone Simon Meadows as Holland, and the promising operatic talent Michael Petruccelli, showcasing their prowess in roles that explore the depths of human emotion amidst the grandeur of the bush.

Eucalyptus: The Opera is more than just a performance; it is a poetic ode to the Australian wilderness and a testament to the operatic retelling of timeless tales. This extraordinary production is a celebration of Australia’s rich cultural and natural heritage, offering a transformative experience that resonates with the heart and soul. Whether you’re a seasoned opera aficionado or new to the genre, this is one performance you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars and prepare to be swept away by a story as vast and intricate as the Australian landscape itself.
