Sydney meets Shinjuku at Miji Bar and Grill

If you’ve ever wished Sydney had a proper Japanese izakaya, one that nails the neon-lit energy, the sizzling skewers, and the kind of drinks menu that keeps you lingering, Miji Bar & Grill is about to be your new favourite haunt.

Perched on a lively corner of Miller Street in North Sydney as part of the new Eat Street that’s popped up thanks to new Metro stop Victoria Cross, Miji doesn’t just nod to the izakaya experience, it goes all in. The fit-out screams Tokyo night-life, complete with imported Japanese signage and a replica Shinjuku Arch. Snag a window seat and an ice cold Asahi and North Sydney might just start looking a little more like Shibuya.

Miji isn’t just about looking the part though. Helmed by chef Jacob Lee, whose CV includes Michelin-starred kitchens in New York and Seoul, the menu delivers a serious flavour punch. Think chargrilled scallop with yuzu butter, smoky edamame, and palette impressing endeavours like the King Prawn with Tomato Miso Sauce (trust us, order it). And because no izakaya is complete without skewers, Miji serves up an entire section dedicated to perfectly grilled, juicy sticks of goodness.

Now, let’s talk about the real game-changer: self-serve sake. Yes, you read that right. Miji has a tap-and-pour system offering 24 different wines, sakes, and mocktails, making it one of the only Sydney venues to bring this Hong Kong and Beijing-inspired concept to life. How does it work? Easy. You grab a pre-paid membership card, tap, pay, and pour. If that’s all too much effort, the bartenders are more than happy to shake up something special, like the Doraemon, a playful mix of apple sake, vodka, blue curaçao, coconut, and marshmallow.

“We wanted to create a space where everyone feels welcome,” says Lee. “Whether you’re clocking off late from work, catching up with mates, or looking for a fun family dinner, Miji is here to bring the energy.”

And energy is exactly what you’ll find. From the glow of the bar to the buzz of the crowd, Miji Bar & Grill isn’t just serving up great Japanese fare, it’s delivering an experience. Authentic, vibrant, and just a little bit cheeky, exactly how an izakaya should be.
