Malvern, get ready to raise a glass! The suburb’s newest pub, The Gardiner Hotel, is swinging open its doors on Friday, 29th November, and it’s set to be more than just your average watering hole.
With its multi-level design, sun-drenched rooftop terrace, and a menu that’ll have foodies swooning, The Gardiner is poised to become the heart and soul of the neighbourhood.
Sitting proudly at the corner of Glenferrie and Wattletree Roads, The Gardiner Hotel occupies the iconic old National Bank building, a local landmark since 1915. The venue honours Malvern’s rich history with its name—a nod to John Gardiner, the namesake of Gardiner’s Creek and the former Gardiner’s Creek Road, now known as Toorak Road. Blending heritage charm with contemporary style, the build is designed to complement the neighbourhood while offering a warm, welcoming spot for locals to gather.
“We cannot wait to finally swing the doors open to this beautiful pub!” said Venue Manager Scott Matthews. “We’ve made sure there’s something for everyone because we want our entire community to love it as much as we do and gather at The Gardiner for many years to come.”
The Gardiner is more than just a pub—it’s a multi-level social hub designed to suit all occasions. Whether you’re popping in for a casual drink, a family dinner, or hosting a celebration, this place has got you covered. The ground floor features a vibrant public bar and a dining space, designed with warm timber tones, elegant feature lighting, and plush seating. Upstairs, a private function room offers the perfect setting for intimate events.
But the real showstopper? The rooftop terrace. Offering all-year-round comfort with sunlit spaces, ample heating, and a retractable roof, it’s ideal for sipping a cocktail on a summer afternoon or cosying up for drinks under the heaters on cooler evenings.
At the helm of the kitchen is Head Chef Michael Flemming, whose impressive résumé includes stints at Arkhe SA and Press Food & Wine SA. His seasonal menu is designed for sharing, and trust us, every dish is worth sinking your teeth into. Highlights include the Smoked Beetroot Tartare, Stracciatella with green tomatoes, and those utterly addictive Cauliflower Cheese Croquettes.
Feeling meaty? The 14-Day Dry Aged Duck Breast is calling your name, served with pepper sauce, béarnaise, and rustic fries. And of course, you can’t go wrong with elevated classics like the Chicken Schnitty or beer-battered Fish & Chips. Kids won’t miss out either, with a dedicated menu that includes chicken and chips, pasta, and an Ice Cream Sundae to top it off.
The Gardiner Hotel is all about community, and its lineup of weekly events proves it. Sundays bring a comforting roast with all the trimmings for $35, available from midday until sold out. On Wednesdays, oyster lovers can indulge in $4 Buck Shuck during happy hour from 5pm to 7pm.
And for those who like a bit of fun with their philanthropy, the Community Raffle every Thursday is a must. Collaborating with local favourite Peter Bouchier, the raffle offers a chance to snag premium prizes like a meat tray, a $100 voucher, or a jug of beer. Tickets are only $5 each (or $20 for five), with all proceeds going to the Cabrini Hospital Foundation.
If you’re as excited as we are, bookings are already open as of 12th November. This is your chance to be amongst the first to enjoy Malvern’s new pride and joy. Ideal for lunch, dinner, and all those moments in between, The Gardiner Hotel is ready to welcome everyone when it officially opens on Friday, 29th November.
Mark your calendars, Malvern locals—your new local has arrived. With its rich history, incredible menu, and dedication to community, The Gardiner Hotel is set to become the place where you eat, drink, and make memories for years to come.
