The dirt-free domestic: How to keep a white home feeling vibrant

White home

We all yearn for that white home. You know the ones; they’re splashed over every home magazine and TV show, and there are at least a few scattered in your neighbourhood. So, if you are going to add a few more pieces to your home to create your white haven, here is what you need to know to keep it clean. Keeping your white home clean and dirt-free can quickly become a full time job if you don’t stay on top of it.

Start with the bottom

When you clean your room, if there are no clothes and mess on the floor – you generally feel like the job is almost done. The same goes for your white floors. Keep up to date with your carpet maintenance, and only use the best carpet shampooer to ensure perfectly white results from your luxurious white carpet.

You may also want to change your surfaces to white floorboards, white floating floorboards or even white polishes concrete. This is a drastic step, and it is generally easier to improve what you have, then replace it entirely. Each surface varies in maintenance, but none are more sought after than carpet.

Clean your walls

This is a task that anyone should complete with some regularity, but if you have white walls? You will be able to tell if you skip this errand, and you might need to accept what your new ‘regularity’ means. You can clean your walls by hand with a sponge or cloth, or you can even use a roller if you have more walls to get through. Pay special attention to your smaller and closed off rooms, they might be exhibiting a few mould spots at some points throughout the year. This can be quickly removed with exit mould. Marks and mould are incredibly noticeable on pure white walls, so keep your eyes peeled.

Furniture material

This is your friendly reminder that you have a choice of what furniture you choose, and what material those items are. Typically most couches and lounge chairs are fabric. They are more affordable to buy, allow us a full spectrum of colours, and they feel good. Now that you have building your white palace, you may want to step out of your familiarity and choose a fabric more hardy like leather or PU.

Cleaning leather does not need to happen often, and when it does, it’s just a wipe of a leather conditioner, vacuum and shine. Fabric furniture is far more complicated, and may need to be done more often. You could even choose white benches for your home which would be very visually appealing, but perhaps not as comfortable.

Windows and doors

It makes sense that these windows and doors need to be cleaned regularly. They are constantly being pushed, pulled and fiddled with by the hands of everyone in the home. Given these white doors and windows are some of the first things your guests see, you will want to keep these looking dirt-free. Commit to a weekly wash and wipe of these doors and windows, as well as removing the cobwebs and inspects that seem to congregate and expire on the sills.

There is a reason white homes are so sought after. They’re a promise of perfect design, simplistic aesthetic, and they just feel clean and untouched. This image will be quickly shutdown if there are marks, dirt and mess that interfere with what you are trying to create. Keep a rolling cleaning schedule to keep you accountable. Fortunately, with a white home, what you need to clean will be as plain as day and hard to avoid unless you try.
