6 interesting things about decorative concrete

If you are thinking of making a few home improvements, then we have put together this article with you in mind. Decorative concrete is a lot more fun than anyone thinks it is – and we are on a mission to prove it. So read on and find out what the top 6 most interesting things about it are… we promise you will be shocked!

Decorative concrete isn’t interesting!

Sure it is! Decorative concrete WA is full of fun facts! Here are our top 6 points, sure to shock and awe you into submission…

1 – Concrete was Invented in ancient Rome

The Ancient Romans were the first to develop concrete for building material. They mixed crushed stones with sand and water to create a slick paste that could be formed into tiles and blocks. For some reason, it fell out of favour until the middle ages, when it sprung up again in use.

2 – Decorative concrete has no melting point

You can’t melt concrete. The things you decorate it with, the dyes or baubles, can melt… but the concrete itself won’t. However, it does degrade when it hits a thousand degrees. This means that a 1000-degree fire can turn a building into ashes… and it doesn’t need to melt anything, to do so.

3 – Concrete is resistant

Decorative concrete can be used both underwater and in areas where the fire is common. It might degrade at 1000 degrees – but it is very hard to achieve that kind of heat without specialist equipment. For that reason, several under water sculptures are cast in concrete.

4 – The world loves cement

This year alone, the world used around 5.2 metric tones of cement. That’s a whole lot of decorative cement for pathways, buildings, monuments and structures. We use cement now rather than drag stones from the river as we might have in old times. Production has become easier than putting in that kind of effort.

5 – It’s not dull!

Upscale neighbourhoods have started using decorative concrete to line their streets. If you apply a layer of epoxy or a high gloss, you get the smoothest finish possible. You can even trap things inside the resin to make it even more original. If you want to be the envy of your neighbours in the coming seasons, then decorative concrete is how you do it!

6 – It’s less expensive than you think

While concrete has been around for years and is well established as a cheaper-than-clay-bricks option; decorating it, has not. Nevertheless, you might be surprised at how cheaply it can transform your home. Used as flooring it will elevate any interior designs, used externally, it will make your garden one remember.

Whatever you do with your decorative concrete, make sure it stands out. Finish it with a varnish or gloss or add in unusual textures to really stand out from the crowd. Decorative concrete is all the rage right now. Are you on-trend? If not, there is still time before summer…
