Inside Giovanni’s Room Brings Baldwin’s Vision to Life Through Dance

From June 11-14, contemporary dance meets literary brilliance as Phoenix Dance Theatre presents Inside Giovanni’s Room at Sadler’s Wells East in London. This emotive production draws from James Baldwin’s 1956 ground-breaking novel Giovanni’s Room, transforming its poignant exploration of love, identity, and self-acceptance into a full-length narrative dance.

Having premiered earlier this year in Leeds, Inside Giovanni’s Room is a creative landmark for Phoenix Dance Theatre, which recently celebrated over four decades of pushing cultural boundaries. Now, it invites London audiences to experience powerful storytelling set to movement, a fitting tribute to Baldwin’s legacy as we commemorate his 100th birthday.

Baldwin’s Timeless Influence

James Baldwin, celebrated for his literary exploration of the African American experience and deeply personal themes, wrote Giovanni’s Room at a significant personal risk. Tackling taboo subjects such as same-sex relationships and sexual identity during the conservative 1950s, Baldwin defied the norms of his era, creating a work now recognized as a literary classic.

“It’s incredible to see how relevant Baldwin’s themes remain to this day,” says Marcus Jarrell Willis, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre and choreographer of Inside Giovanni’s Room. “Baldwin’s choice to be unapologetically himself, and to tell stories that needed to be told, resonates deeply with me as an artist and a black American navigating different cultures.”

Through his adaptation, Willis honors Baldwin’s legacy by translating the dense emotional layers of the novel into an immersive visual experience. The production taps into the raw humanity that Baldwin so eloquently wrote about, making it both a celebration of his work and a reminder of its enduring relevance.

Choreographic Brilliance Meets Cultural Legacy

Willis, who became the ninth artistic director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in 2023, brings a wealth of experience to this production. A former performer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Willis has dedicated his career to connecting people through dance and storytelling. His interpretation of Giovanni’s Room builds on Phoenix Dance Theatre’s tradition of amplifying underrepresented voices, a practice that dates back to the company’s founding by three young Black British men over 40 years ago.

“For Phoenix Dance Theatre, this production is more than just a performance,” Willis notes. “It’s about continuing a global conversation around identity and celebrating artists like Baldwin who bravely paved the way for others.”

In Inside Giovanni’s Room, the dancers take audiences on a visual and emotional odyssey through the book’s central themes of love, guilt, and acceptance. Set in 1950s Paris, the dance brings to life Baldwin’s story of a young man grappling with his desires and tangling with societal expectations, presented in a way that feels surprisingly modern.

A Bold Reinvention

What makes Inside Giovanni’s Room unique is its accessible yet deeply moving format, blending narrative dance with intricate storytelling. Willis has chosen Sadler’s Wells East, a venue known for fostering innovative creative works, to host this profound interpretation of Baldwin’s novel.

Designed to connect with modern audiences, the production avoids decorative distractions, focusing instead on human connection and the universality of its themes. “The challenges of adapting such a revered novel were what motivated me most,” Willis says. “Using the universal language of dance has allowed us to breathe new, visceral life into Baldwin’s work.”

Q&A with Marcus Jarrell Willis

To deepen your understanding of the creative process behind this captivating production, here are highlights from a conversation with Marcus Jarrell Willis:

Exploring Inspiration and Personal Connection

What was it about James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room that resonated with you, and how has your personal connection to the novel influenced your creative vision for this production?
I first read the book in my early 20s and what inspired me then, as it does now, is that it’s a story that is still present in today’s world. While it is set in the 1950s, the themes remain relevant today. My relationship with the work has unlocked a lot of things within me personally. While it isn’t my exact story, I can relate to so many of the themes.

I also connect strongly with Baldwin’s life choices as a Black American who sought a space where his voice could be heard. His unapologetic approach to life and art is a touchstone in my own creative process.

Adapting Literature into Dance

What were the biggest challenges in translating Baldwin’s words and themes into movement, and how did you approach this creatively?
The biggest challenge was staying true to Baldwin’s novel while working in the medium of dance. This meant stripping the work back to its emotional core and letting the artistic process flow naturally. Dance has a unique ability to connect universally, so translating the novel this way was exhilarating.

Timeless Themes and Relevance

How does Inside Giovanni’s Room highlight the ongoing significance of Baldwin’s themes, and what do you hope the audience takes away from this experience?
The novel’s themes of love, guilt, and self-acceptance resonate universally. What I hope audiences take away is the importance of acknowledging and understanding what it means to accept oneself. Baldwin’s work is as relevant today as it was in the 1950s, and I hope this production evokes both personal reflection and appreciation of his genius.

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Legacy and Vision

How does this production build on Phoenix Dance Theatre’s legacy, and how do you envision its role in cultural conversations around identity and acceptance?
Phoenix has always championed underrepresented voices through dance, making Baldwin’s work a natural fit. This production continues that legacy by sparking broader conversations about identity and ensuring Baldwin’s contributions are celebrated by new generations.
