Prepare for a trip down memory lane! After more than two decades, Elijah Moshinsky’s whimsical production of the beloved fairytale, Hansel & Gretel, is making its nostalgic return to the Sydney Opera House stage from 27 January.
This is your chance to rediscover a classic tale, brought to life with all the magic and wonder of grand opera.
This production is described as an ‘operatic fairytale with teeth,’ and it absolutely lives up to the name. It beautifully balances the charming, familiar story with the darker undertones of the original Grimms’ fairytale. Get ready for a theatrical experience that is both enchanting and thrilling, promising a night of pure spectacle and sophisticated music.
A Storybook World on Stage
One of the most breathtaking elements of this production is the surreal, storybook world created by celebrated set and costume designer Mark Thompson. The stage transforms into a larger-than-life wonderland, pulling you directly into the heart of the forest. The iconic Witch’s house, a confectionary dream with a sinister secret, is a true highlight that will leave you in awe.
Bringing this vision back to life is Claudia Osborne, making her exciting debut as Revival Director. As the inaugural director of Opera Australia’s Young Artist Program, Osborne is perfectly poised to reinvigorate Moshinsky’s wickedly beautiful production, ensuring it feels as fresh and captivating as ever for a new generation of theatregoers.
A Score of Folk Tunes and Luscious Sounds
Engelbert Humperdinck’s magnificent score is the heart and soul of this opera. Performed in English, it is filled with gorgeous German folk tunes and rich, luscious orchestrations that sweep you away. Leading the all-star Australian cast and the acclaimed Opera Australia Orchestra is OA’s Head of Music, Tahu Matheson, who will expertly navigate the sophisticated and emotional score.
The music beautifully captures the story’s dual nature—from the playful melodies of the children to the grand, sweeping themes that underscore their perilous journey. It’s a stunning musical experience that will resonate long after the final curtain falls.
An All-Star Cast Takes the Stage
This revival boasts a truly exceptional cast of Australian talent. Internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano Margaret Plummer returns home to perform the role of Hansel. You might remember her delightful performance as The Prince in Cinderella last summer! She is joined by one of Australia’s most accomplished performers, Stacey Alleaume, as Gretel.
In a wonderful full-circle moment, soprano Jane Ede will don the iconic horn-shaped wig of The Witch. This role is particularly special for her, as it was her very first professional operatic part in Opera Australia’s School Tour back in 2000. It marks the start of what has become an outstanding 25-year career with the company. What an incredible journey!
Rounding out this stellar cast are audience favourites Helen Sherman and Andrew Moran as Gertrude and Peter, the titular characters’ parents. Opera Australia Young Artist Shikara Ringdahl will also make her role debut as the Sandman, the mysterious figure who sets the children on their fateful path.
A Perfect Night Out for Everyone
Whether you’re a seasoned opera aficionado or completely new to the art form, Hansel & Gretel is the perfect production to experience. Full of humour, heart, and a touch of childhood nostalgia, it offers a familiar story and accessible language that serves as a fitting invitation into the world of opera.
For dedicated opera lovers, the stunning music, brilliant cast, and magnificent staging offer a rich and rewarding theatrical treat. Don’t miss your chance to be captivated by this magical, timeless tale. It’s an unforgettable journey into a world of fantasy, courage, and breathtaking music that you won’t want to end.
