Get ready, Sydney, because the moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here!
L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, the legendary Naples pizzeria made even more famous by Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love, is officially opening its first Australian restaurant. This Friday, 5th December, a true slice of Italian history is landing right in the heart of Sydney’s CBD!
With a staggering 155 years of heritage, this isn’t just another pizza joint. It’s the original, the global benchmark, and a culinary institution with over 80 locations worldwide. Now, it’s bringing an authentic piece of Naples to our doorstep, promising real pizza, fair prices, and the kind of warmth only true Neapolitan hospitality can offer.
A Taste of Naples Arrives in Sydney
Since first opening its doors in 1870, Da Michele has built its legendary reputation on three simple things: simplicity, tradition, and excellence. The original shop in Naples, still proudly family-owned, is considered by many to be the best in the world. For years, dedicated foodies have travelled across the globe for a taste of the real deal.
“Sydney, the wait for true pizza is finally over,” says Da Michele representative Giuseppe Costagliola. “For years, Australians have travelled to Naples for the real deal, or have been eating overpriced fakes. Now, we’ve brought the same ingredients and craftsmanship to Australia, so locals can experience the real pizza that started it all.”
This has been a passion project years in the making. To guarantee complete authenticity, every single element has been meticulously sourced directly from Naples. We’re talking imported Italian tomatoes, creamy Agerola Fiordilatte cheese, and even the specialist oven and tools needed to craft the perfect pizza.
More Than Just Pizza, It’s a UNESCO Heritage Craft
What makes a Da Michele pizza so special? It’s more than just the ingredients; it’s about the cultural heritage baked into every single pie. In 2017, the art of the Neapolitan ‘pizzaiolo’ was officially recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This isn’t just cooking; it’s an art form celebrating centuries of tradition, skill, and social ritual.
“Many pizzerias claim to serve ‘Neapolitan style,’ but no others can live up to the original,” adds Costagliola. “We’ve brought everything from our hometown: the oven, the artisans, the vitality of Naples, so that every bite can transport you there in an instant.”
From the moment you step inside, you’ll be immersed in the experience. The sight of hand-stretched dough flying through the air, the scent of perfectly blistered crusts emerging from the oven, and the vibrant atmosphere all come together to transport you straight to the bustling streets of Naples.
Authentic Flavour Without the Luxury Price Tag
Despite its legendary status, Da Michele is sticking to its roots with fair pricing. Proving that true quality doesn’t need to be expensive, their iconic pizzas will cost just $18. This commitment to accessibility is at the heart of their philosophy.
“When it comes to food, luxury is about authenticity, not about money!” Costagliola concludes. It’s a sentiment echoed by pizza-chef Alfredo, who adds, “Our promise is simple: real pizza, popular prices, and the warmth of true Neapolitan hospitality.”
The menu will proudly feature Da Michele’s two iconic creations: the classic Margherita and the beautifully simple Marinara. These will be complemented by a carefully curated selection of antipasti, pastas, and desserts that capture the genuine soul of Naples. And, of course, no meal would be complete without a digestif of authentic Limoncello from Sorrento!
Da Michele Sydney isn’t just aiming to be a novelty. The goal is to become a beloved fixture of the city’s dining culture—a genuine destination for anyone who loves incredible Italian food and tradition.
