A trip through Ancestry gave Karen a great tale of family history

Ancestry grandfather

Karen had always been curious in nature, a trait that recently saw her discover a family secret that had been buried for more than 100 years.  Karen’s grandparents didn’t speak much about their family history and both she and her parents grew up with many questions about their past.  With a profound desire to learn about her ancestors’ lives and her family’s identity, she embarked on a quest to explore her personal history, but soon into her research, she hit a “brick wall” – a dead end in her research that she couldn’t seem to get past.   Luckily for Karen, she was given the opportunity to work with a genealogy expert from Ancestry ProGenealogists and this is how the further branches of her family tree were revealed.  After searching through historic records such as birth certificates, newspaper articles and marriage records, and by utilising the results of Karen’s AncestryDNA test, the Ancestry ProGenealogists helped her discover that Karen’s great-grandfather James was born illegitimately and that her family name, Lockett, may not be her true biological name. Karen’s great great-grandfather (also called James) married the love of his life Mary, while she was pregnant with another man’s child. He humbly took on the role as baby James’ father and the real story of Karen’s great grandfather James and his loving parents was kept a secret…until now.    Karen and her family were astonished to learn the truth about their past and the discoveries have sparked a desire in Karen to pursue her next research quest – to uncover the identity of her true paternal ancestors.  Karen said: “Working with the Ancestry ProGenealogists was a dream come true. I have researched my family history for years, but I had hit a brick wall on my father’s paternal lines and receiving this help from experts was invaluable to get me on the right… Read More

Thanks to nature shampoo: Luxe quality without the salon price tag

Thanks to nature shampoo

Why wouldn’t you treat your hair as you would your skin with quality, sulfate-free products? Using products that contain sulfates are potentially not only bad for the environment but also bad for your scalp. For instance, did you know sulfate-free products help maintain the natural oils on your scalp and hair, whereas products containing sulfate can strip your scalp of natural oils? So if you’re looking for affordable, salon-quality hair products, the newly launched Thanks To Nature brand may very well be your new go-to.  Husband and wife co-founders, Natalie and Sean Cassar have seen great success in the hair, health and beauty industry, successfully launching Headgear, Barber & Co and Jack the Barber brands. However, they saw a clear gap in the market that will now be filled by Thanks To Nature.  “There was a huge gap in the market for salon-quality, naturally derived, efficacious hair products for women that were available in a supermarket. Australian women spend so much on salon shampoos and we wanted to make salon-quality more accessible,” said Natalie.  All products in the collection are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, contain no parabens and are sulphate-free. Not only is this luxury haircare range developed using the best naturally derived ingredients but is also accessible, affordable and comes with a huge 500ml of product.  All products in the Thanks To Nature collection are delicately fragranced and come in a luxurious matte finish bottle with copper detailing. The packaging is so slick, you’ll be proud to display the products in your bathroom. And may we… Read More

Koonara Wines family vintner has introduced Emily May Rose

Rose wine

Channelling Spain, this year’s new batch of rose wine by the family operated Koonara Wines has got a an intense pink hue and big Turkish delight. Think raspberry and strawberry flesh notes, which like all Koonara’s Wines, the Emily May Rose is low in sulphur, low in residual sugar and vegan friendly. The rose is an homage to the founder’s gran, Emiline May Reschke, who lived on the family property until she was 99. She was an accomplished dressmaker and designer, teacher, bridge and scrabble guru and professional floral artist, and forever immortalised in this beautiful wine. Pleasantly, the batch is one of a great push of vineyards taking steps towards not using pesticides or herbicides. “We have not used any pesticides or herbicides in our Coonawarra vineyards for over a decade, as it can rob the soil of nearly all the good micro-fungi,” says Dru, a self-confessed eco-obsessed Vigneron and co-owner of the family owned winery. For more info and to get your own bottles, find out more at the Koonara website.
