Best of Hong Kong dance comes to Sydney

Dancers Hong Kong

This July, audiences in Sydney are invited to immerse themselves in “Convergence,” an extraordinary blend of martial arts and Chinese dance, presented by the Hong Kong Dance Company at the Seymour Centre.

Scheduled for three performances from 12 to 13 July, this captivating production unites power, speed, and aesthetics, offering significant insights for dancers and choreographers worldwide.

Presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney, “Convergence” showcases choreography by the company’s acclaimed Artistic Director, Yang Yuntao. This production is the culmination of a collaborative exploration since 2018 into the rich heritage of Chinese dance and martial arts, merging styles like Hung Kuen, Choy Lay Fut, and Fujian White Crane.

Artistic Director Yang Yuntao elucidates his vision: “Convergence is more than a performance; it embodies the evolution of our artistic journey. It signifies a departure from our past, forging new paths and reshaping our identity. This synthesis of external movements and inner consciousness transforms our physical state and enriches our pursuit of truth and beauty in performance.”

“This production pushes our dancers beyond traditional boundaries, presenting a narrative that stimulates thought as much as it captivates visually. We are thrilled to introduce this innovative expression of strength and beauty to Sydney, appealing to an audience that appreciates both modernity and tradition.”

“Convergence” not only highlights the prowess of its dancers, including principal dancers Ho Ho-fei and Ong Tze Shen, but also features cutting-edge digital art. The fusion of ancient cultural elements with contemporary music, video projections, and lighting crafts a surreal, dream-like ambiance.
