New spa opens in Sydney: Sense of Self

Sydney is set to experience a major wellness upgrade with the highly anticipated arrival of Sense Of Self, Australia’s modern bathhouse trailblazer.

Slated to open in 2024, this will be the second location for the Melbourne-born brand, following the overwhelming success of its Collingwood flagship. Situated on the border of Surry Hills and Paddington, the new bathhouse promises to be a serene antidote to the chaos of modern life, offering Sydneysiders a much-needed space to reconnect with themselves and their community.

A Space to Truly Unwind

Housed within a sprawling two-storey industrial warehouse spanning more than 1,000 square metres, Sense Of Self is set to become Sydney’s most spacious indoor bathhouse. Guests are encouraged to arrive as they are—free of expectations and, refreshingly, without the distraction of digital devices.

The bathhouse will feature a suite of thoughtfully designed spaces, including large mineral pools heated to a soothing 39°C, expansive 80°C saunas, an indulgent Hammam steam room sitting at 46°C, and refreshing Cold Plunge pools kept at a bracing 10-12°C. For those in need of some extra TLC, there will be dedicated treatment rooms and abundant relaxation spaces where guests can drift off into pure bliss—or even take a quick nap.

For those who can’t get enough, a bespoke gift store will offer curated wares, letting visitors bring a little slice of Sense Of Self’s signature serenity back home.

Design Meets Functionality

The design of Sense Of Self Sydney promises to be as much a highlight as the bathing experience itself. Renowned architecture and interior design studio RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN has been brought on board to create a space that blends functionality with beauty. Drawing subtle inspiration from the Collingwood flagship, the Sydney bathhouse aims to reflect the culture, climate, and unique character of its local area.

Freya Berwick, Founder and Director of Sense Of Self, elaborates on the vision, sharing, “Sense Of Self Sydney will embrace the rich colour palette that is unique to our new site, local area and to Sydney itself. Expect textured surfaces, exposed brickwork and expansive spaces of lightness and darkness to hold both the social and solo bather.”

The space is designed with inclusivity and accessibility in mind, featuring a balance of inspiring aesthetics and thoughtful user experience. Every corner is a study in contrasts—light and dark, social and intimate—allowing guests to tailor their visit to their individual needs.

Beyond Bathing

More than just a collection of beautifully designed pools and saunas, Sense Of Self aims to be a place where communal and personal journeys coexist. Berwick says, “Bathhouses are so much more than the sum of their parts—they serve different functions for different people; from recovery bathing through to social connection and body acceptance, and we love catering to all of those needs.”

Central to the Sense Of Self philosophy is the idea of generosity—of space, connection, and care. Whether you’re seeking quiet contemplation, meaningful conversations, or a moment to centre yourself, this bathhouse is designed to hold you in an environment that is both inspiring and deeply nurturing.

A Haven for Everyone

With a focus on creating an inclusive space, Sense Of Self invites Sydneysiders to leave behind the rush of daily life and immerse themselves in a world where wellness, community, and design converge. From the inviting warmth of the mineral pools to the quiet splendour of the saunas, every element has been carefully crafted to encourage guests to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect—with themselves, each other, and their surroundings.

If the success of the Collingwood location is anything to go by, Sense Of Self Sydney is set to redefine the wellness landscape in the city. Freya Berwick sums it up best, “Communal bathing is all about sharing the experience with others, but it is also an intimate and vulnerable experience that calls for generosity of space, which Sense Of Self Sydney will deliver across 1,000 square metres.”

Keep an eye out for the launch of this serene oasis in 2024—because the next big wave in wellness might just be a mineral one.
