What to know about caviar at the Canberra Good Food Month this March

Good Food Month returns to Canberra this March with some incredible events filling the calendar, kicking off with the always popular Enlighten Night Noodle Markets on 2 March.

In addition to some already sold out events, there is a host of fantastic local events captained by some of Canberra’s best and brightest culinary talent, like Michael Box from QT Canberra who’s all about good caviar this season.

With a masterclass on offer, we had a chat with him about the jewels of the ocean.

What makes Canberra such a good location for food and cafes and restaurants?

If you look at where Canberra has been, and where it is heading, it’s a very exciting time for our industry. Canberra is offering a mixture of city & regional styled cuisines.

How is Canberra offering something new to the Australian food and culture scene?

I don’t think it’s what is being newly offered, I think it’s that Canberra is executing their service and product very well. Canberra has a number of great dining venues, using local produce, keeping on trends with the city food cultures but with a great, laid-back approach to it.

What can people expect from your event for Canberra Food Month?

Our event is being held by Lisa Downs of Simon Johnson.  Lisa will be showcasing some of the best Caviar on the market. Lisa will take you through an exploration of the history of caviar, what the market is like today, how it is sustainably sourced, what creates demand, how to taste it, why we love it, and a lot more! There will be three types of Caviar which are all complimented with delicate blini’s and classic condiments.

How can food bring people together and why?

When you share food with people, you are sharing an experience. It removes all the barriers that we put up in our lives and brings a joy to everyone. Food keeps people connected by sitting down and talking about life and love. Having a young family, we love getting our son to help us cook in the mornings, be it pancakes or just eggs. And more importantly, food brings us together to understand culture’s around the world through the variety of different cuisines that we possess.

What do you most enjoy about food?

The fact that if you understand the basics then it’s one of the simplest of things that can put a smile on everyone’s face; and then it’s about quality and consistency. Have these three things right, your set to go!
