Almost everyone you speak to lately is off to Japan to ski the slopes at Hokkaido, take in the views of Mt. Fuji and explore the laneways of Tokyo. Now you can get a glimpse of all the wonder and entertainment of Japan’s unique culture right from Sydney’s CBD.

In partnership with Kirin, Merivale have replicated all the buzz and wonder of Tokyo’s tiny bars by turning the Ivy Pool Club into the Golden Gai.

The cosy cabanas have been completely transformed into exclusive bars, each serving up a variety of traditional cuisines. Each section is tailored to a different food and a different theme, which means you can visit a chicken yakitori station reminiscent of an old-school record store or take a seat at a sushi bar beneath walls lined with bottles of sake. Don’t forget to slurp up some authentic ramen with oodles of noodles mixed with pork or tofu and, of course, the classic soft boiled egg.

As well as food, there’s a special assortment of Kirin flavours not usually up for grabs in Australia that is sure to suit every palate. Plus, a fruity Kirin cider and Tokyo-inspired cocktails are on offer for the non-beer drinkers.

Usually a haven for partygoers, Ivy Pool Club has certainly captured the vibrance of Tokyo nightlife. As you make your way from bar to bar, it’s hard not to be distracted by performances by traditional drummers and hip-hop dancers – not to mention some breakdancing from the beloved anime character Pikachu.

It wouldn’t be Japan without a photo booth, so gather the crew and throw up a peace sign to get that authentic kawaii cute factor. Then treat yourself to a matcha soft serve topped with vibrant sprinkles and fairy floss as the perfect sweet treat to finish off your Japanese banquet.

It’s refreshing to see Ivy Pool Club filled with tea lights rather than the usual bikini-clad Sunday patrons, but the party vibes have well and truly stayed the same. Live music keep the good vibes going all night long as you explore the cultural hub under the lights of hanging lanterns.

Each night features a glimpse of true Tokyo- style entertainment. On Tuesdays, you can challenge your mates to not-so-friendly Mario Cart battle. Wednesdays are all about testing your artistic flair with calligraphy workshops. Thursdays are dedicated to hip-hop with a Japanese twist. And of course, Friday night is for getting down to a stellar DJ line-up to say ‘kanpai’ (cheers!) to the weekend.

Tiny Tokyo will run all month-long, Tuesday to Friday nights from 6-9pm. Find out more at the website.
