Tanked: where two of Melbourne’s elite fall in love and move in together

By Jane Pendry.

You know when two of your best mates finally get together and you can’t recall a time when they were just friends?  That’s how the new collaboration between Fitzroy’s Hammer & Tong and South Yara’s Less Than Zero feels.  The launch party on Thursday night exuded confidence.  With a paired back, quietly confident vibe it was swarming with Melbourne’s well heeled trend setters swigging Sangria and listening to house beats.

The guys at Hammer & Tong continue to go from strength to strength with their Fitzroy venue busier than ever and a pop-up truck success.  This new enterprise has clearly had the chefs working hard to perfectly pair a slightly southern New Orleans menu with Less Than Zero’s cracking rum and infamous Japanese whisky collections.  Must try dishes include southern chicken wings, avocado briost (briosh/ croissant hybrid genius!) and crispy maple bacon jerky.  With a beer garden outside and a pool table upstairs, the suped up and newly loved up Less than Zero is sure to become one of the summer’s hottest hangouts.

What to wear: boots, grey t-shirt, a beard.
What to drink: rum neat.  It’s the new bourbon don’t you know?
What to eat: all of it.
