Queen of Broadway: The Ethel Merman Story

To bring to life one of Broadway’s most iconic divas, translate her larger than life personality to an intimate cabaret space and performance is no mean feat. Jon Jackson took the bull by the horns and did just that in his Melbourne Cabaret Festival show Queen of Broadway: The Ethel Merman Story at Chapel Off Chapel this year.

The life and times of Ethel Merman created the structure of the show which was punctuated with songs made famous by the musical theatre legend. During the arc of the show Jackson, an operatically trained counter tenor, alternated between singing Merman’s signature songs and impersonating the deceased diva who was “back on earth for one last hour” to show that she still had it.

As great as Jackson’s talent is, the obstacle faced by any performer impersonating another is wanting to ensure every move and every sound is as like the original as possible. Couple that with the unmistakable, recognisable, and unique sound of Merman’s voice, and even the most talented is going to fall a little short in some areas.

With that said, Jackson’s energy and unmissable passion are infectious and leave the audience knowing they’ve seen a seasoned performer at work.

Queen of Broadway: The Ethel Merman Story is playing during the Melbourne Cabaret Festival at Chapel Off Chapel from Wednesday 21st of June to Sunday 25th June 2017.
