Oscar Oscar’s August For Men

The first thing you notice about any Oscar Oscar salon is how stylish, clinical and luxurious they are.

Coupled with the people who work there and the extensive list of services and products they offer in-salon, you know you’re in for a treat.

Oscar Oscar is this August focusing on men and their male clientelle! It’s so good to see a salon chain as prosperous and higher end as they are, are paying as much attention to men and their hair and beauty needs as they do their lady clientele.

Their Chadstone salon welcomed me recently to experience what they have to offer. Thrown into the package a massage, facial, haircut and colour and style, with little tidbits like coffee, cookies and back copies of GQ to keep me occupied during the quiet moments.

Introduced to salon co-director and partner, Jacky Chan, I delved into men’s hair styles and styling tips, trends and general chit chat about the Oscar Oscar brand.

Having been around for about 24 years, the company has certainly built itself a reputable name that sets it well in the firmament of ‘go-to’ salons in Australia. It was started in Queensland by Oscar Cullinan – where the company is still headed – and has expanded down the east coast of Australia, bringing its own brand of hair and hair styling to men and women.

Working in conjunction with such leading brand names as Redken, Kerrastasse and Aveda, Oscar Oscar brings a bevvy of finely produced, higher end products and treatments to each customer that is only too readily available.

With a team of about eleven people that keep the salon a buzzing hive of activity, dedicated hair dressers, stylists, colourists and apprentices keep the end product walking out the door nothing short of impressive.

Jacky was a brilliant fountain of insight and knowledge on the hair and style industry. Dispensing some of the knowledge from his eleven or so years in the biz, I walked away with not only a practical and well crafted (all by scissors and comb) haircut and highlights, but a few key bits of insight into men and their hair:

– trends in the coming months will see the return of the shabby ‘just rolled out of bed’ look with more length than many men are used to

– a nozzle on the tip of a hairdryer is a man’s best friend. Coupled with a Denman

– a bit of colouring removes some of the smooth outer layer of the hair it’s applied to and makes it easier to style and ‘grit-up’

When I asked Jacky what his one tip when it comes to men’s hair care is; his answer?

Wash your hair.
