Opera Australia’s Melbourne season dazzles with three Victorian premieres
Opera Australia returns to the Arts Centre Melbourne in May with a trio of fine, new productions locals will love!
Carmen (read the review here), Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci (read about it here) and King Roger the Polish opera everyone’s talking about (read the review here) will all grace the stage, giving Melburnians something to really sink their operatic teeth into.
Opening the season first-off is John Bell’s highly acclaimed production of Bizet’s Carmen starring Israeli born mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham (Carmen) and Ukrainian tenor Dmytro Popov (Don José), who will return to the Opera Australia stage after starring in Carmen in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour.
Opera Australia is giving Melbourne audiences the opportunity to experience a classic, operatic double bill with Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, reimagined by celebrated director Damiano Michieletto. Winning the Olivier Award for Best New Opera in 2016, Michieletto’s production garnered high critical acclaim, with The Independent calling it “A triumphant evening” and Harper’s Bazaar (UK) describing it as “Genuinely clever”.
The season culminates with a new, highly acclaimed production of Szymanowski’s King Roger, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience an extraordinary piece of work that is being performed for the first time in Australia in 2017. A co-production with the Royal Opera House and Dallas Opera, it was first staged in Covent Garden where critics described director Kasper Holten’s arresting staging as a “major artistic triumph” (The Telegraph, UK).
