This 1926 opera in three acts by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski tells the story of a Christian monarch whose kingdom is turned upside down by the arrival of a charismatic shepherd extolling pagan beliefs who captivates people and Queen alike.

The moody, dramatic book and music articulate power, faith, anguish and temptation brilliantly. But what sets this production apart is the stunning sets courtesy of set and costume designer Steffen Aarfin.

They’re both imposing and regal whilst also taking the audience into the tortured mind of the King, who reveals his torment of losing his grip on his people, his wife and reality. King Roger is a breathtaking performance that sets up Opera Australia’s 2017 season as one not to miss.
