Lunch in Melbourne with Vincent Van Gogh

When you’re celebrating iconic artists like Vincent Van Gogh, it’s got to be with a bang, and that’s exactly what Sofitel Melbourne On Collins set out to achieve.

Inspired by the National Gallery of Victoria’s newly opened Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, Van Gogh & The Seasons, we were treated to a dining experience like no other. Sofitel’s Executive Chef John Savage produced an array of classic French dishes, similar to what Vincent Van Gogh would have enjoyed in the late 1800’s, with a modern twist.

The delectable dishes included salad Lyonnaise, Boeuf Bourguignon with braised beef, pomme purée, sautéed mushrooms and red wine sauce to name a few. But the pièce de résistance was, of course, the crème caramel with cognac soaked raisins. It was like we were transported straight to the South of France.

In between the meals, we were also encouraged to channel our own inner artist by replicating one of Van Gogh’s paintings…on a plate (yes, really). Safe to say it was a memorable experience, but it also reminded me of why I didn’t pursue visual art as a viable career path.

All in all, it was an eclectic, colourful array of food and art that paid homage to one of the world’s most renowned artist in spectacular fashion.

If you’re a post-Impressionist gastronomist or a secret foodie at heart, you can embrace your inner artist and ‘Lunch like Van Gogh’ at No.35 Restaurant from 12pm every Thursday and Friday from 11th May until 9th July 2017.
